Hi! My name is Jessica I am new to this!! I am 22 and have a daughter that turned 4 months yesterday... The newest obstacle we are facing is burping. We have used the same bottles and formula for 2 months now but in the past week Miley will not burp. I usually allow her to eat 3-4 ounces before stopping her to burp and normally things are fine she burps and we keep eating but not recently. At what age do infants stop burping on request and start doing it on their own? Sometimes it might be twenty minutes but she'll just be sitting playing and burp on her own. Totally confused as to why my baby is not burping. Any help would be great!

Hi Jessica,

My daughter is 10 weeks and does the same sometimes. What I do is I let her finish and drink as much as she wants, when she is done she will start to play with her bottle. I lay her down for a minute and then pick her up to burp her..it has worked every single time. Maybe try letting Miley finish and then after a minute pick her up to burp her...:)

Hi iam a mother of 3 my youngest is 1 I bottle fed most of my kids and what I found helped was to sit them on my knee hold there cheeks inbetween my thumb and index finger and tilt them back and forward your other hand on their back of course and they would usually burp on their own or I would have to pat them a few times but i usually burbed them after half there bottle was done.

Jax is 4 months, eating solids and a 5 oz bottle, and he hardly ever burps any more. If he does, it's on his own.....I could pat his back until I was blue in the face and wouldn't get a burp, so i just stopped trying.

Sometimes mommy hood is trial and error, there are no manuals, and it can be very confusing! Anyhow, my advice to you is that if she isn't hurting or fussy and she doesn't spit up a lot when she burps on her own, then she is just fine. Remember all babies are different and do things their own way. Hope this helps.

If she can burp on her own then I wouldn't worry. If she is crying after feedings and not burping that is a concern. I don't remember exactly when my boys stopped on demand burping but around 4-6 months sounds about normal. As long as she can get the gas out if she has any then not to worry. Otherwise consult her doctor.

maybe she's just better at bottle feeding now. maybe she's not swallowing any air. or at least not as much. good luck

I'm not sure off the top of my head on an age when this happens but C is also burping on her own now! Which is a relief since she's never been good at giving them up for us;)

My pediatrician said babies don't need to really be actively burped by their parents once they reach about 4 months, they can wiggle around and get the gas out effectively on their own. Lucy doesn't usually burp after a 4 ounce bottle, but she'll let fly around a half hour after lunch, no help at all :)

Yeah, I try not to worry about it; if I have tried to burp him and nothing has happened I will just lay him on his tummy on the floor and with them pushing up this usually helps get any trapped air out.
