I have 3 kids. We have been tiki tubing for the past 3 summers. It is very inexpensive. We only pay for the frice of the hotel of our choice and our rafts for tiki tubing. You are allowed to bring an ice chest with your own food and drinks; and they have a flotation device that you can rent for cheap so that your ice chest can float down the river with you. It is a very relaxing yet fun vaca. It is in Denham Springs. A must for any vacation!

state parks sometimes offer small "shelter" cabins for very cheap. check in your state or around there and see if you can find anything. good luck.

my boyfriend just took a week off and instead of a "vacation" we explored our own area. we found festivals, went camping on the beach just an hour away, we tried water parks and took picnics. basically we planned everything and would pack a bag in the morning and hop in the car! we had a great week. we spent a little of the money that you spend on vacation but our daughter was able to sleep in her own bed! makes life much easier with the little ones.

cap off the week with a big family bbq! your friends and your kids friends could come.... we had a really good week :)

I also agree with camping! A campground with a beach will keep the kids busy for hours (NY state has a lot of campgrounds on local lakes)! If you know anyone with a pop up camper that they would let you borrow, that would be GREAT, especially if it rains! Hiking is fun, nature walks, scavengar hunts, bike rides, roasting marshmallows... get creative! There are lots of ways to keep kids entertained, and I'm sure there are LOTS of resources for family camping trips on the web if you just google it!

I would agree with camping, that's about all our budget allows. We all have a blast!

washington dc is pretty cheap. most of the attractions are free plus it's educational! i am planning to take me kids in october and it seems like there's a lot of hotels outside of dc offering some really nice deals right now!

like some others have said...drive to a state park in another part of the state. camp out. you can do the smores, hot dogs and all the good stuff kids love but don't get a whole lot of at home. most state parks have pools, hiking and even horseback riding.

Camping is great-if you know anyone who could loan you some gear, that would be the cheapest route. If not, there are used sporting goods stores where you could pick up a tent (ok, maybe two since you are a big family :). State parks are usually cheaper than private campgrounds, many of them have swimming pools or lakes, and there is no comparison for quality family time! Look for a campground with decent bath houses, and take flipflops to wear in the public showers! Just remember bug spray, firewood, and spread a tarp under the tent and one over it unless it has a seperate rain sheet. You can have a great time walking, riding bikes, sitting around a campfire, etc.
