Hi i just found this site my two year old daughter has an asd,vsd and an av canal defect. We have found this defect is commonly found in children with down syndrome although she is not. Anyone have any experience with this defect she was diagnosed at 5 mos and had surgery a week later she is almost three now and we have had zero complications so far praise god.

My son was also born with an AV canal defect with a cleft mitral valve. He does not have Down's Syndrome either. He was not diagnosed until he was 3 years old. He had his first surgery 1 month after diagnosis. His repair on the mitral valve had come undone before the 2nd anniversary of his surgery. He had his 2nd surgery 2 years ago (when he was almost 6). He is 8 years old today and has had no other problems. His activities are not limited in any way, and it is not likely that he will need anymore surgeries...Praise God!

My daughter also had an av canal defect that was corrected at 2 months. She does not have down syndrome either and is doing extremely well. She is only 14 months now and it is good to hear of an older child still doing very well. Thank you for sharing.
