I was wondering if more people have a stricter, more structured attitude with food and their kids or if our kids are free to grab snacks in the kitchen when they are hungry. We're divided on this and it seems to be starting arguments with my husband and myself. I was just curious how other families are.

For us meals are very structured, breakfast at 7:30am and dinner at 5:30pm. Snacking is very relaxed they can eat fruit anytime they like.

It really would depend on the situation... how your kids behave and what foods you keep in the kitchen. Some kids need the parents to intervene because of the kids lack self control. Some kids are responsible and adhere to snack times and make healthy choices. My step-kids generally ask for food if they're hungry and don't just grab stuff. If it's too close to dinner we tell them to wait, and we may plan dinner a bit earlier so they don't have to wait as long. However, if we say they can have a snack and we're not paying attention, they may grab anything in the kitchen and not what would be the healthiest choice. Each household may be different and need a different amount of supervision.
