I had the mirena IUD put in in june last year, after being persuaded by my doctor. I had many symptoms with various pills i tried and needed something different. I was wondering if anyone had any of the symptoms i have eg, weight gain, mood swings, tiredness, period like pains every day and bloated feelings. i also get headaches all the time. my doctor informed me these symptoms would be unlikely to occur. im beginning to get a bit peed off with it all and just want something that doesnt give me all these nasty side affects. I also have spots which ive never had in my life!!! has anyone had fertility problems after removal? just wondering for the future. also how is it removed? i feel like ripping it out myself at times!!!!

I got the Mirena after my daughter was born and HATED it. Hate is a nice word for it. My doctor thought I was crazy. She insisted I had other issues and it was in no way my IUD. I left it in for 6 months and finally had it removed. I instantly felt better. The symptoms I had were: dizziness, nausea, headaches (severe everyday), cramps, period for 3 weeks for the first 3 months then no period at all, bloated stomach, absolutely no sex drive and mood swings. I was most disturbed by the headaches and my dizziness caused blurred vision many times and I would have to pull my car over. I say get it removed, you'll feel better. Doctors do not know everything. This is not a coincidence. I don't know about the feritlity issues. I don't plan to have any other children. I'm on Yaz now and love it.

I had the mirena IUD and had all the same horrible side effects as you and more. I asked my doctor to take it out and she refused me the first time, and after that everything got worse, I had even bigger mood swings and snapped at everything so iwent back and demanded her to take it out. All they do is put the metal pice up your you know what and pull it out with a tool. No pain. I have had it out now for almost six months and I feel soo much better.

I have had mine almost a year. I have gained 20 pounds, have an extremely irregular period, and I get a lot of sharp pains from it. I dont like it at all and wouldnt recommend it.

I had mirena from 2007 to 2009. I had it removed because it made me very moody and I wanted to have another baby. Well, 3 years later and still no baby, but my mood is better. Mirena is horrible!

I had the Mirena for about a year and a half didn't have an issue till one morning the i was cramping really bad. My private parts had a lot of hard preasure. All I could think was I wanted it out now. I had went to the hospital and found out that i was bleeding into my abdomen. Then found out that I was 3 months pregnant and I had an ectopic pregnancy. They said if i would have waited another day i would have bleeded internally and died. Something i'll never forget. To anyone who has it or wants it please take a pregnacy test every so often. Please protect your life and baby. If you are pregnant with the mirena you might be able to save your fetus. Thank you

I have had Mirena for 5 years. The first year was a rough year of my body adjusting. I experienced cramping and cysts. Mood swings were my enemy. I am a person with chronic migraines that are controlled with seizure meds and I can say that the Mirena didn't really change that. After the first year things were good. My doctor offered to take it out, but encouraged me to let my body adjust she let me know that some people take longer to adjust. I went two days ago to have it removed and did run into complications. My strings have coiled up and are no longer reachable without causing pain. An ultrasound showed that everything was in place and everything was okay. Going today to have it removed today after taking muscle relaxers for a couple days and they are going to give me local anesthetic. Going to have a new one inserted while I am there. I love the flexibility of the Mirena. I have tried many other options. I am a proud mother of two beautiful girls. When I am ready for a third I will have my Mirena removed :)

I had mirena in for a year the the first 6 months were very uncomfrontable and then i had to go the ER and have it removes! I couldnt find it and i was having all kinds of pains and very sick to my stomach. It took the ER dr. 15 mintues or more to find it and get it out. Everybodies body is differnt.

I told you ladies all the systoms that I had with it, and now after 2 years of having it in am having my first period. Let me tell you it is HELL. I have horrible cramps and are having to go back to the doctor to have them check it again, and tell me its NOT the Mirena.

[deleted account]

I had the Mirena fitted in January this year.  Within 24 hours my hands, feet and abdomin were swollen.  Within 48 hours my skin started to break out.  Within 72 hours I turned into a complete mental case.  Within 96 hours my lips and eyelids were swollen.  It's fair to say that I am completely allergic to the Mirena.  My doctor tried to convince me to leave it in until it settled in.  Was beginning to think she was being paid by Mirena.  Had it removed 10 days after it was fitted.  So, that's no to the Mirena, Implanon and the pill.  Having a tubal ligation later in the year.

Get a second opinion, i had a few symptoms like that at the very start but all has calmed down now. My gynachologist said if it didnt feel right to me then have it taken out. You should go with instinct.

I've had mine in for about a year and 4 months now... as the pill (even the mini pill) gave me pregnancy symptoms.... and I DOOOOO have symptoms.

Weight Gain... aweful!

mood swings... especially if it is 'that time of the month'

and heartburn!

the period like pains went away just  a few months ago...

but I get bloated often

and I'm tired.. don't know if that is related to Mirena or not.

I had periods but they have went to 3-4 days of LIGHT spotting... and this was recently, before it was 1 week of light period which would start and stop.

as for the removal, I'm not sure yet. Haven't tried to remove it..

i do like not having to worry though

I was sick all the time on the pill and now I have the Mirena I absolutely love it. No nasea, and I actually lost some weight. I occasionally have some cramping for a day or two a month but nothing bad.

I had mine placed oct 2007 and "spotted" for 6 straight months. I still have a regular monthly period, though it is much lighter. The only reason I've left it in, is because I've been to busy to get in to the doctor to complain. I was really disappointed. During the 6 months of straight spotting, I was ticked! My husband was about to deploy and I wasn't sure I would be able to "say goodbye" before he left!

I also use the Mirena and had it inserted in July 07. So far I'm absolutely loving it! It's the most effective contraception I know of and it's the easiest as you don't have to think about it. :o)

When I read the symptoms all of you listed, I might have had a few, but I never connected it to the Mirena. Thinking about it carefully the only ones I really 'blame' on the Mirena would be headaches now and then and my hair falling out a little bit more than I would like. But every woman is unique, so what works for one won't neccessarily work for the other.

So far I haven't come across women who complained of infertility problems caused by the Mirena IF it was placed correctly. And make sure the doctor who removes it (if you want to) knows what he's doing. Not all doctors are trained for this, so please make sure to prevent any future problems.

As Nina said, they take it out the same way they put it in, through the cervix.

I would also like to add, that with the Mirena I successfully breastfed Jayden for almost 17 months with no problems, so that was a huge plus point to me!

I'm gonna say that obviously every womens body is different. I've never used any other birth control, other then the "Mirena". After the 5min process to have it placed correctly, I cramped for 20mins took some tylenol and away I went, now I've had it for going on 2yrs and yes occasionaly I spotted for the first 6 moths. Your doctor should have explained that the mirena slows the flow of your peroid down in some cases stopping it all together. Mine stopped again after 6mth, but if I ever do anything like lift something heavy I begin to spot. Another thing is if you lose or gain weight your doctor should send you for an ultrasound to make sure its still in place, cause to much weight gain or to much weight loss can cause the mirena to shift! An that would require the removal of it and for it to be replaced and properly placed again. An the Mirena is not like you standard IUD, there is NO fertility problems, its removed and a week later you get your period and away you go...The IUD everyone knows causes scar tissue, because of its design. The mirena is a cloth like medicated tampon you leave in for 5yrs. I hope that helps.

I had that IUD in Aug of 2004 after the birth of my daughter, and I had some of the same symptoms but my body rejected it, by Mar 2005 it feel out so did not have it replaced.

I have chronic and severe migraines. Having the Mirena made them worse!!!  I have high pain tolerance, but I couldn't even get out of bed.  If he is suggesting the Mirena for menstraul cycle control ask switching to a copper one instead. The copper one doesn't secreate any form of hormones.

let the dr take it out....It isn't the most pleasant thing.

I love it!!! I have had a little bit of weight gain, normal monthly cramping but almostnever any spotting. If you want it removed you just go to your doctor and they will remove it the same way they put it in.

I think I tried every form of Birth Control until about a year and a half ago when I got the Mirena. I will tell you girl, that I have had those symptoms, and worse. There was one time when I thought I had a brain tumor, and just knew I had to be pregnant again. I have had ALL kinds of tests done, and it all seems to point to that.

I had the cramps, and still do. I havent had a period at all on it which is good but sometimes I wish I would the cramps are so bad. I had really bad headaches to the point that I had MRI's done, cause like I said I was sure something was really wrong.

I have, and still do leak from my breasts really bad to the point where I was scheduled for a mammogram...the doctor told me that these were all side effects. I have also had the weight gain.

I also had tons of symptoms with birth control pills, but I haven't had any trouble at all with the Mirena. You should definitely talk to your doctor. I would also suggest having the doctor take it out rather than ripping it out yourself! :)
