Picky eating??!! HELP!!!!

[deleted account] ( 6 moms have responded )

Okay so my daughter will be 2 years old next month and for the past week she has been really picky and wont eat much of anything. I assume part of it has to do with the fact that i'm trying to get her to eat more healthy foods. But she is getting so picky that she isnt even eating all the foods she normally would eat.. It is so frustrating!! Please someone tell me this is just a phase and that it will end soon. I don't know what to do. Should i just feed her what she wants or will eat? or just give her what she should be eating and hope that she will get hungry enough and eat it? Any help or advice would be great. Thanks.

I think its a tough balance. For one thing, you want them to eat a balanced healthy meal, but you also don't want to give them a complex about eating. I would suggest, finding something or a few things that are the "go-to" foods. For example, with my son I know he will always eat pasta, cheese, hot dogs, chicken, peanut butter, and some form of starch (bagel, bread, etc). However, I make him try what ever it is that I made for dinner first. He has to have 2 bites (one for each year old he is). This usually works. The other thing is that my son likes to dunk, so the other night I made chili for dinner. But instead of giving him a bowl, I made a cheese quasadilla and gave him some chili to dunk it in. He ate a ton because he thought he was getting something special.

One other thing that I tried, and I know this is going to sound weird, but think about the way you talk about food. When I first gave my son fish, and told him it was fish, he looked at his fish tank and started crying. So now whenever I make fish I call it a fish stick. This little change in phrase made all the difference, and in fact tillapia and mahi mahi are some of his favorite foods. The same with chicken and turkey. Since he knows what animals are called, I have call any white meat a "chicken nugget" and he is ok with it.

I hope these little tricks help. I tried doing some of the "hide the veggies" recipes and such and he never really like them.

there is a saying that no child will ever go hungry and i agree. Both my children go through phases where they decide to be picky with what they eat. All i do is out the food in front of them and if they dont eat it then they dont get anything till the next meal and give it a few days when they realise that when you go to the shop and dont buy sweets or you wont let them have crisps or things like that then they soon eat.

Someone just said she persisted in offering the same foods over and over and it did eventually work.
So keep trying!!!!

my son goes through lots of eating phases. It can be really frustrating for all of us but we just keep in mind that as long as he's eating 'soemthing' throughtout the day he's ok. He'll eat when he needs to. ..And , he always does. :) It'll be ok..
