My son is 4 months, 4 days old... i started giving him some cereal after his 4 month appointment a few days ago. I didn't give him a whole lot, and mixed it with some breastmilk and a bit of water. He had a hard time the first day follwing his night feeding of cereal, but had a BM that night, i gave him more cereal after that... now he hasn't had a BM for 2 days... his tummy is hurting him terribly and he is really gassy. I love him eating cereal because FINALLY he'll sleep through the night, but he feels downright aweful due to teh constipation..

what should i do...the doctor isn't helping me much.. they said just give him apple juice but, he has never had it before, and when i gave it to him, it seemed to make it worse.. (i think because his tummy has never experienced that before. )

i think his tummy has dealt with too much in too little a time.

DID YOUR BABY HAVING PROBLEMS WITH BOWEL MOVEMENTS AFTER EXPERIENCING CEREAL THE FIRST TIME? WHAT DID YOU DO????

THANKS

They say you can start cereal at 4 months, yes, but only if they're ready. Sounds like maybe your baby is having a hard time digesting the cereal. Why not just stop giving it to him for now and start again in a few weeks?

The AAP recommendation is to wait until 6 months before adding complimentary foods.
We tried the same w/ our first (cereal @ 4.5mo) - she had constipation issues too. We backed off til 6mo & then no problems. Our 2nd we waitied until 6.5mo. (She wasn't showing interest til then) and no problems.

My sweet little Toni has had such a difficult time since birth with her bm's. Her pediatrician diagnosed her with a tight anal sphincter. If her tummy starts to hurt and she hasn't had a bowel movement in over a day, we give her half a suppository. By holding it in for five minutes, its guaranteed to make her feel better.

The pediatrician told us to mix prunes in with the rice cereal to help even out the constipation. Remember that your mommy instincts are usually right!

I was told you're not suppose to put rice in a bottle, I cant remember the actual reason my doctor gave me, but I did read that it is a choking hazard.

You are suppose to start with veggies first because once they get the taste of something sweet (except for my boy, he just loves his food) they tend to WANT the sweets vs the veggies. I wasn't meaning to give her child actual veggies, start with the ONES, then the TWOS (once he or she can sit WITHOUT support) etc...

I know you are suppose to start them with rice cereals, but to my recent knowledge, they're used as a filler with no real nutritional value, I could be wrong and I probably am, but there's nothing wrong with starting oatmeal either, I know Ethan does not like the rice cereal. He'll keep spitting it out.

Either way Becky, you are the mother, you know whats best for your child. If you have any questions, talk to your childs nurse or doctor.

When I introduced formula with my 4 months infant, he became constipated and used to cry when trying to poop. I started mixing one oz Babies magic tea in 8oz formula and feeding twice. It helped with his bowel movement and he started passing stool without any struggle.

My 4 month old has had reflux and spits up often, My doctor recommended rice cereal in a bottle for my 4month old because it will weight his milk down and be able to hold it down easier. To start it is 1/2 T per oz of milk. My 4 month old has been spitting up less but dealing with some BM issues.

The way i figure is my mom gave me and my 15 siblings kyro suryp when we were constipated and all of us turned out just fine none of us has any medical or mental problems but no its not really the suryp that is helping its the water babies are people too and need water the suryp just makes them want to drink it because most babies dont like the taste of water. my daughter loves water but thats because i dont give her tap water i give her reverse osmosis water softened water theres at least one place in most towns that you can get it by the gallon my family goes though about a gallon a day it has zero impurities so your baby dont get anything extra with the water just watch your baby when you try something if they dont like it or start acting different than usual then dont do it now i am not saying that i am a better mom than anyone else here because i am not i have my faults but in here your only supposed to give advice not put down other moms for what they are doing with thier children and several times i have felt thins way no way is the wrong way do whats best for your baby and you thats all you can do motherhood is no contest to see who is the better mom. just remember this i was so afraid that i was going to be a bad mom because i am young but my mom tells me everyday how proud of me she is and i have even had friends parents tell me the same. ITS ALL ABOUT DOING THE BEST FOR YOUR BABY AND YOU AND THATS IT

For one i would not recommend green veggies first go light to dark i personally give my daughter one new veggies and fruit at least once a month massage the tummy for gas or constipation thats what my mom told me also Karo syrap helps as well mix it with some water which is something else how much water are you giving your baby babies are just like us and get dehidrated and need more what which can cause constipation just like with us and keep you baby active it help lossen the bowels in my expiriance rice is better than oat meal but i also put them in my daughters bottles before i gave it to her by spoon getting her tummy and taste buds ready for it and the baby will still sleep well at night

Or even gas drops might work. Something to look into, might be a lot cheaper.

When I first had my daughter I was having a lot of trouble breastfeeding so I was supplementing with formula. Going back and forth was giving her a lot of gas and she was also getting constipated. My Doctor suggested "Bio Gaia" they are probiotic drops you give once a day and they balance the digestive system. They are all natural. You can get them over the counter from the pharmacist. They are about 20$ for a 5ml bottle. They worked great for my daughter! Hope this helps!

honestly, I dont know. Ethans fine with whatever I give him. I've been getting the "sneak attacks" cant smell anything until I open his sleeper.. then it's hoooly crap dude! :) My sister has 3 sons and recommended green veggies first because you tend to skip them more. I was told by the doctor greens or orange are fine, avoid sweets because they'll want them instead of the veggies. Like I said though, I mix the sweets with the oatmeal (doesnt taste so plain then) Feel free to email me if you have any more questions.

Spending time with my son is the reason I wake up. I LOVE everything about it :) Now that we're introducing him to different foods too... its awesome. My personal fav is when he gets sooooo excited to see that spoon & then when it gets in his mouth, he spits it out :D hes hilarious. He does eat though, loves his food :)

Becky,

With whoever said apple or prune juice... it's fine, but only do an 1/2 oz to 1oz. and mix it with formula or breast milk. And be prepared lol :)

I second the post about oatmeal...we tried rice and it made him incredibly gassy and constipated. Switched to oatmeal the next day and had no problems! Good luck =0)

I had the same problem with my 4 1/2 month old. I finally started feeding her baby food prunes and pears (both stage 1 foods for babies 4 mos and up). I feed it to her with her cereal and seems to be helping.

My daughter has always had pooping issues since birth. She would go 5-6 days without pooping, but it was always thinner when she would go so the doc wasn't too worried about it. I was...The doc said that the cereal should make her more regular and help with her pooping more often. It did just the opposite. She was SO constipated that her little butt was bleeding because she was pushing so hard. I attempted to use baby suppositories on her but she kept pushing them out of her butt. I had also started her on the oatmeal since the rice is supposed to have more of a...binding...effect. I found that Dark Karo syrup works well. Put a teaspoon per 4oz in each bottle until they start to poop again. Then put it in every other bottle, and so on and so forth. I have to put it in at least 2 of my daughters bottles a day to keep her going at least every 2-3 days. She goes and it is not hard on her tummy and she doesn't "explode" her diaper with poop either but goes a lot the first day she starts moving again.

Give oatmeal a try. It's okay to give oatmeal. I actually prefer oatmeal over Rice cereal. I have 5 kids and run a daycare and from my experience you may have to back off a little with how much you feed the cereal to your little guy. I would reserve the cereal time for in the evening for about a week then try adding cereal time for lunch and supper the following week. Just gradually increase the frequency of feeding cereal to your little guy. My doctor told me when it comes to suppositories you have to be careful. You don't want to do it too many times. I would leave that as an absolute last resort.
But try massaging his belly and pumping his legs.
I just looked up giving babies corn syrup for constipation and came across an article talking about way you shouldn't use corn syrup here is the link:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/karo-sy...
Please look into it because it sounds like it is not safe to use for babies.

There are suppositories that you can buy that help constipation as well. Apple juice always worked for my daughter, but you can also try prune juice.

Maybe ask your pedi if you can start him on oatmeal instead of rice cereal? Oatmeal doesn't constipate like rice cereal does. GL!

Yes cereal and baby food will make ur baby constipated until their bodies get used to it. Try putting corn syrup in his bottles it helps make them regular. My son has always had hard poopies so our doctor gave us some powder medicine that helps make his stools soft. If he is only 4 months I wouldn't give him straigh apple juice it is way too sugary and can actually give him the runs.Try the corn syrup tho that helped my son but don't give him to much just about 1tbsp and see how that works. You can always up it tho if you need to it al depends on how big he is. Hope this helps, hope the lil guy feels better!!
O and if he is gassy try gas drops too those help and rub his tummy in a clockwise motion, or lay him on his back and jiggle his legs then kinda push his knees in towards his belly it helps loosen up the gas and makes him fart to help get some of the gas out
