A friend of mine's son was sucking mainly at night. His therapist had her put tube socks on his arms and safety pin them to his PJs. She said it worked wonders. Originally they just did it with one hand and he asked to have both hands done because he realized he was sucking the other thumb since he couldn'y get to the one he liked. She was so thrilled he asked and was aware!!! Thumb sucking can cause major dental problems and also it can cause sores and infections on the fingers themselves so sometimes it really is something that in some children has to be dealt with before the child is ready. Trying to teach them other comfort methods that do not cause physical harm is a solution.

Dont!!! Thats all I am saying the more you persist with it the more she will continue. My 9 year old still sucks her thumb for bedtime only or when she is upset. Its a comfort thing. Look at it this way. Would you suffer with a bad headache and not do anything about it? No you would reach for those painkillers. Same with thumb sooking its a comforter. She will grow out of it in her own time. Having said that some don't I know one person who is in her thirties and she still does it and is considered one of the toughest women in our area. Don't force it on her she will give it up in her own time. Hope this helps :D
