My little girl thinks she is a dog

My daughter is almost 20 months old and I catch her eating the dog food, and drinking out of the dog's water bowl like they do. Now she wants me to give her water in a bowl so she can lick it up! What should I do??

My daughter has started doing this a little bit. She doesn't eat the dogs food or drink their water, tho. We started discouraging that the moment she looked at their food a little too long. She knows she can't eat it and she knows their water isn't for her to even play in. However when it comes to her eating off her own plate, she sometimes leans her head down to get a bite rather than use her hands or a utensil to get her food. It's cute and as long as she stays away from the dogs food, I don't have a problem with it.

Let us know if your daughter grew out of that phase or is still doing it.

very delayed, but this Question caught my eye.... I think It' really funny, my husband acted like a dog when he was 3, for about 3months straight! it drove his parents crazy. At times my 24mth old does too, even though we don't have a dog, she loves them so much. i wouldn't worry, she'll grow sick of it, I'd just keep the dog food and water out of her reach. My son is 9 and was the same - dog lover, and still sometimes asks for a bowl to drink water out of! we think its funny.

aw, that's cute! I see the concern, and at 20 month's it's hard to try and explain she's not a dog! Our son has tried that a little bit at the mother in laws, still does from time to time.

My guess is it's just a phase and will not last forever, however if you have other kids her age then maybe have her spend a little more time with them? Kids like to copy things, so if she has other kids to copy it may help out a little bit.

Quick, take some pictures! You will treasure those in years to come. Other than that, I don't think dog food or dog water will hurt her. I wouldn't stress out about it, but I do try to keep my son away from the dog's bowls by keeping them in a room he doesn't have access to. It means I have to let the dog in and out, but it's easier than cleaning up the messes my son would make with the dog's food and water.

This sounds cute but it's just your daughter acting out what she sees. This is normal stuff. You have to explain and enforce that she is little girl and that's for the dog only. My son use to think that the water bowl was a hand washing station, all kids react differently just work with her.
