Birthing Classes

[deleted account] ( 11 moms have responded )

Hey Everyone!
I am new to the group, but have already found it great already!
I was wondering if anyone has started their birthing classes yet? or if anyone has decided not to take them? I am having a hard time finding one that fits into my schedule and since I live in a small town the only person offering them wants over $500. Any thoughts?

I took the prenatal classes my hospital offered with my first, and if I had wanted they offered lamaze for about 175 I think.  500 sounds really steep.  I don't think I'll be taking birthing classes this time around either, last time I was induced, and it probably wouldn't have helped me much.

With my first child we couldn't afford prenatal classes so we rented a birthing class video from the library. It was kinda out of date, but gave me alot of helpful information.

Its about a 30 min drive for me to get to the closes class, it's offered by one of the hospitals in the city, but naturally not the one I had and will be having my child at. Also the Local crisis Pregnancy center (I've been donating and supporting the center for a number of years now) has a class they offer, and i think the Local WIC also has a small class. The Center and the WIC are free so look into them if there are within you driving range

I didn't take them with with my 1st and don't plan on taking them with this one either. The nurses talk you through the whole thing and tell you what to do anyway. I would suggest saving the money and the time!

I am taking classes from the hospital. One of the classes covers the tour of the birthing unit, breathing techniques, labor positions, what to pack in your bag, helping to create the birth plan, massaging techniques (for the partner), etc. This class is two days (saturday and sunday) for about 6 hours each day. The other class is Infant CPR and First Aid - which is only one day and is about 3 hours. In total for both classes I paid $140. Hopefully you can find something cheaper. If you are looking for Lamaze type classes I wish you luck. I've searched around my area for Lamaze and/or Bradley Method - and they run about upwards of $500/each....

The class I took with my son was $200 and really worth every penny . It was a 3 hour class that met 6 times. This pregnancy I'm going to take a hypno-birthing class and it should be about $100 (not sure how often it meets yet). I think it's worth paying to take a child birthing class (especially if it's your first), but $500 seems a bit much to me.

Wow, I don't think I'd pay $500 either, that's a lot!  Here at my hospital in San Jose CA it is $135 for 6 2-hour classes, or for one full day class on a weekend.  I was surprised at that even, but figured that was still do-able.  I'd maybe look a little further away for a one day class that was more reasonably priced.  good luck!

I'm checking with my hospital for classes - I don't know how much it'll cost, but I think it'll be good bonding for the DH & baby.

The hospital I delivered at offered a  one & two day class. Obviously the one day was a long day but if you live in the boonies, maybe a one day class would be worth the drive, somewhere?? - I would suggest the class. Some things are interesting, informative and duh things, but overall very useful. Ilive in the Chi burbs and the two day class was $95. Hope you find what you are looking for and that it doesn't cost you 500! That's TOO much!

Did you check with your hospital?  My midwife told me that I needed to take the "prenatal" classes offered through the hospital.  It was every Thursday evening for 6 weeks for about 2 hours.  It cost about $50.  $500 sounds pretty expensive.

I think that is pretty expensive!! My classes don't start until the 3rd week of March and I have 4-hr sessions for $65 so I don't know how important the classes are to you but I wouldn't pay that much for the classes.
