Hello everyone,

My daughter just turned 5 months and we decided to introduce rice cereal to her yesterday b/c she's been very hungry.

Anyway, for those of you who have introduced solids already, I'd like to know what some of your experiences have been. I gave her rice cereal yesterday once and today once so far. She didn't really care that much for it - I gave her 1TB with some formula to liquefy it - and she had only a few baby spoons worth until she started grimacing and had enough. Is this normal? Is this something she will eventually grow to like? I suppose if she continues to not be a fan we can add other things to the cereal - but I obviously can't do that yet b/c we only just started.

Suggestions? Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks!

Robin

We had originally thought we'd wait until 6 months to introduce solids - but my pediatrician and I both agreed that it was time being that she's been taking enormous bottles and waking up early to eat and getting hungry early (before her normal every 3 hrs) - so it was really time.

Anyway, thanks for all of your suggestions so far. The last two times I gave it to her she still wasn't all that thrilled - I've been making it with lots of liquid but maybe I need to do more until she starts to get it. So, I'll try that and see if it helps.

The AAP now recommends 4-6 months of age. It used to be 6 months, but they pushed it back. Here's a link to this on the AAP website: http://www.aap.org/publiced/BR_Solids.ht...
Anyways, are you sure you made it thin enough? It's supposed to be very runny. The suggestion is 4 tablespoons (2 ounces) of formula for 1 tablespoon of rice cereal. It will seem very thin at first, but you can increase the thickness as your baby starts to accept this.

i gave my son farex(rice cereal) at 3mnths, and he liked it had no problem, because he wasnt taking to his bottle all the time so i tried that so he is getting some form of food. but stopped once he took to his bottles again, iu gave him again at 5mnths and he hated it spat it back out. so i just gave him the fruit solids its alot smoother and he loves it. maybe your daughter just doesnt like the thickness or the chunkyness of the rice cereal as my son doesnt he will only eat something that is absolutely smooth. i hope that gives you a little bit of help if any =)

Most pediatricians would not advice solid food until 6 months because babies intestines are not yet prepared for it. SO I think you should ask your pediatrician about it too just to see what she has to say. They all have diffierent opinion about that.

But anyway, about your question. Give the cereal for one whole week. It is normal that she rejects it the first few days because it is something new to her. =) Once she starts eating the rice cereal, you can try giving her a different kind of food the following week.
