What solids to start on?

My little boy is four months old (born 12th May 2009) and apparently hasn't gained any weight in the last month so we are going to try solids to see if that helps him put on some weight.

Do I just start on rice cereal or can I puree some potato/breastmilk, banana/breastmilk, apple/breastmilk?

id start with the simple tastes 1st like potato, rice, baby cereal.......sometimes fruits can be a little bitter for them....plus if u start them on sweet things they might get a sweet tooth and not want ther veggys

my daughter is a little over 18weeks and she has two meals a day. baby cereal in the morning and veggys at dinner( things like butternut squash & potato)

I started Zaire on rice cereal/breast milk & he didn't take to it well. I made him some peaches & he really got the hang of eating. Now he is on peas. I say do what you think & have read, that's what I do. I read Parents mag & it said that giving fruit first or veggies or cereal really doesn't matter.............

OK the best advice I can give is OATMEAL CERAL! The rice will bind them up. And my husband and I make our own baby food and Sweet pots are FANTASTIC, Apples, ,Pears, Squash (we use butternut) bananas (has the tendancy to cause constipation too so careful there, Apples will clear them out If you have that issue though LOL Good luck!

I started with just rice cereal and formula(breast milk if you are bfing). An applesauce consistency worked best for us to start with.

Thanks for the responses, it can be so hard these days with all the guidelines. We've given him rice cereal. The first time was a huge mess but the second time was a success, he seems to have already grasped it :)

I just made up some avocado/breastmilk, potato/breastmilk and pumpkin/breastmilk purees. I gave him a taste of each and he loved them. Success!!

My son, Evan started with rice cereal, he ate it so well we later started adding baby food. Some store bought, some homemade. His ped. said to start veggies then fruit, but we had already started fruit, woops. We switched to veggies and he did fine. He gets a new food every 3 days or so. He loves to eat, his ped. said he was ready as long as he didn't push the food right back out of his mouth. So far he eats rice cereal (sometimes with cinnamon), peas, carrots, potatoes, and applesauce. The only thing he didn't like was prunes from a store, can't say I blame him. He seems to prefer homemade, but the veggies can be a lot of work. If you make your own freezing it in ice cube trays is a good trick.

Satrt on baby rice cereal first, after he has had that for atleast two weeks start on fruits. Make sure when you try him on a fruit keep him on that one fruit for atleast 3 days, to make sure he's not allergic to it. Dont start on anything else till u get through all the fruits.
