My 3.5 year old just mastered a straw!!! Every child is defferent. Try different sippy cups without the straw just a spout.

, I am sure there will be one that he will like. Good luck.

It's common for children not to drink from straws until closer to 2 years of age. I believe most straw cups (even the soft straws) recommend age 2 and up.

That being said, both of my children took to the straw cups long before they understood a regular sippy cup. I bought a cup with a soft straw (I like Nuby or Munchkin brands), filled it to the top with water, laid them back (like I was going to nurse/or give bottle), put the straw centered in their mouth, and then after they sucked a few minutes, I'd sit them up. I started my daughter when she was about 6 months and it did take her a couple times to suck and not chew, but my son took to it on the first time (at 1 year).

As long as he'll drinking from a regular sippy cup, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

My oldest daughter couldnt drink from a straw til she was over 18months, she had no idea what to do, but my 11month old somehow knows how to drink from a straw already, i wouldnt stress it, each baby learns in there differnt time frames

Hey Sasha.
my son is exactly the same. My sister-in-law said she just gave my niece the sippy cup as a toy(with a little water in) Dont worry too much, most sippy cups say 12 months up.

My son has no teeth yet, so he just uses his cup as a chew toy. LOL.

I hope you come right.

I don't know what to say, it's all my son will drink from. He didn't understand a regular sippy cup until 2 days ago. LOL! He would not tip them up and then would get mad when nothing came out. The straw ones were like the lazy man's version. Perfect for him. hehehe

But that being said my sister was like "he can drink for a straw? I remember having trouble with straws when I was a kid." That made her what? 4 or 5. He'll get it. She's totally fine with straws now at 38. LOL!

My son wouldn't drink out of a regular sippy cup and we didn't even know he knew how to drink out of a straw and he started drinking out of a straw. So they are all different. I was shocked that he wouldn't drink out of a reg. sippy cup but would out of a straw.

Most babies at that age can't drink from a straw cup so you are not alone. I know my son doesn't - I haven't even tried actually.

my girl won't even drink from a regular sippy yet, I have been trying it since about 7 months to no avail. So she is still drinking from a bottle. My first child who is now 2, took a sippy right at 6 months and was drinking from a straw cup just after her first birthday… all babies are different.

My son is 11 1/2 months and he just barely started drinking from a straw yesterday. I just held my finger over the end of the straw and made him suck to get anything out and he eventually figured out how to do it on his own.

My mom who was a waitress at a diner for many years said she used this trick on so many customers with kids (who forgots sippy cups) and I tried it with my son who is now 11+ months just yesterday and it worked like a charm...

Make sure there is some liquid in the straw and hold the bottom end over/in his mouth and let the liquid dribble into his mouth so he sees that liquid comes out. Then kneel down and show him you drinking out of the straw. Do it very slowly so he can see your cheeks sucking in and the liquid moving up the straw. Then give it to him and see if he will do it too. I did that and Ethan immediately did it, I couldn't believe how easy it was!

My son is now 11 mths, and the same as Sonia's - using a straw from 7mths and by the same method! It does make it easier when your out, but all kids are different. Eventually they all figure it out, even if it's just from watching someone else do it! Jett refuses to take a pacifier or bottle so I thought I'd have trouble with these sorts of things but he picked it up fine.

My baby is 10 1/2 months and she has been drinking from a straw for about 2-3 months now. We taught all 3 of our children to drink from a straw by putting it in the drink and covering the top with our finger. Then they would taste something yummy and would suck. After a couple of times doing it that way they learned that if they sucked on it regularly they would get their drink. Our girls all learned to drink from a straw at around 6 or 7 months by doing it that way.

My son can drink from a straw and he is 11 months. i believe that all babies are different and some are ready to drink from a straw and some arent ready and need time to figure it out, i would just be patient with the little guy. he will get it. just give him a regular sippy cup. he may just not be ready for a sippy cup with a straw, my son knows how to drink from one i just havent gotten it for him cuase its not till they are older to give it to them.....good luck!!

My 11 month old doesn't drink out of a straw either. She'll put it in her mouth and wait for something to magically come out. :) She does fine with other sippy cups, but we use the ones with holes, not the rubber kind, so she doesn't suck on them. Maybe that has something to do with it...if they aren't used to sucking on cups? She also doesn't even really take a bottle anymore so I don't think that action is as familiar as when she was.
