There's many reasons some babies eat formula instead of moms milk, some moms try to breastfeed but it doesn't work out, some moms choose to formula feed for other reasons.
What brought you to using formula?
Which brand works best for your baby?
What type of bottles does your baby prefer?
Are you happy to formula feed or did you want to breastfeed?

I tried La Leche the first time and no matter what, they couldn;t help. Second time, again I talked to a couple of lactation consultants, and again, couldn't help. You're lucky if the help you have around is really good but they're not all equivalent. :(

Rylie is now on Nutrimigen. She has a horrible milk protein allergy and is doing wonderful without a single tear or cry since starting it :-)

Thank you for suggesting Target formula. My baby had been soooooo fussy. I tried Target brand and he's sleeping better at night, during the day, and is even happier. Yah for Target formula!!

I'm not saying starve a baby' but babies are born to be able to eat from their mom, so unless you give them a bottle they can't prefer a bottle. Sure it's hard and moms might need help but unless a baby has a cleft palate they *can* latch.
Pediatricians usually have only a tiny amount of knowledge on breastfeeding and get preached to by formula reps alot so honestly I'd never trust a pediatricians advise on bfing without backing it up. I was once told to switch to formula cuz Fierna has reflux. Some drs just don't know any better.

Can't say I agree with the whole don't feed your baby at all unless it can drink from the boob deal....
I would make an appt with your baby's doctor and ask them what they think would be best for your baby.

Find a lactation consultant, or a la leche league leader to help. Breastfeeding is so worth the work to figure it out. It's a living substance with full antibodies to protect your baby from germs. If all that's wrong is a latch issue don't give up! Get help and don't give bottles. If the baby only has the option of the breast it will eat!

i want to breastfeed, but my baby doesn't latch to my breast anymore. Which wld be the best formula for babies, closer to breast milk.

Darn cows :) yeah Fierna is sensitive to dairy too so I'm trying to avoid eating my beloved ice cream and yogurts and cheeses. Thankfully I never drank milk so I don't have to give that up but hopefully I can slowly reintroduce the dairy as she gets older :) I just love ice cream!

Well Gavyn's now receiving half of his normal formula and half soy formula because we finally realized he has a cow's milk sensitivity. He's doing well with it mixed half and half, the day after I started doing it his poop immediately went back to normal and he doesn't scream *quite* as much (he's still a grump lol).

I tried breast feeding for a month, and stopped because it wasn't for me, but in a way i wish that I would have continued on, but as long as my baby eats then its all good =) When i did breast feed i was doing both breast and bottle, then i slowly ventured off to the formula. It was easier and more convinient for me and him. Breastfeeding became complicated at some points because of latching problems then it got to the point when he had gotten used to the bottle's nipple. So hey, he likes it i love it lol. I've only used Enfamil because that was what the hospital started him on, so that's what i'll keep him on. He seems to LOVE it and seems like he can't get enough. My baby adapts to all types of nipples/bottles. I'm happy with formula feeding and I was happy with breast feeding as well. No regrets. As long as he's eating, and he's healthy i'm fine with that =)

my milk was good for a month, the same with the other two kids we have. so now we are on enfamil gentlease. no preference on bottle. i breastfed because i know it is good for the baby, but if i had a choice I would prefer not to do it: it hurts terribly, I have to exclusively pump, and after a month it becomes bad (terrible smell and the baby does not eat). Not to talk about all the gallons and gallons that I freeze and become bad also - all down the toilet!

Well, while I was at the hospital with the twins, the consultant told me to put 1 twin per boobyand not change sides, so if Sofia was right boob, keep it that way so both get the same and also both boobs get the same amount of milk and you don't end up with one boob way bigger than the other one

Exactly Amanda! Lol I breastfeed, but I hate it when moms have to be so rude to other moms about formula. I mean I don't live your life right so why can I judge your choices!
But I do think that most moms would be bale to breastfeed if they had enough support and the right information, but since breastfeeding is so rare these days it's hard to get it working.
Hey I was wondering, did you breastfeed both breasts every feeding while you were trying? Or did you do one per feeding? I was told that if you do both every time you can have a fore milk hind milk imbalanse that can cause baby to not get enough of the fatty hind milk and only get the watery fore milk.
Just wondering cuz I'm going to be a breastfeeding peer counselor and I'm trying to learn as much as I can!

Well, I LOVE THIS TOPIC!!!!!
I tried BF and couldnt do it! My milk wasnt fatty enough, and both kids wernt gaining. Rylan got sick and abryelle lost a full pound almost. So we went right to formula. Rylan used enfamil with lipil and did well on it. Abryelle is on Enfamil Gentlease. She has Karo syrup added to it because of constipation. She is doing great so far with the formula. We use Tommee Tippee bottles and let me tell you AWESOME!!!! They make little containers for your formula to be put in and then the container gets put in the bottle and the top and nipple go right over it! SUPER handy! I keep pwarm water in a thermos and always have the things ready to make a bottle. Formula is a big pain in the butt but also so nice. You have to carry a ton of stuff with you if you go out, but you dont have to go and try and find a place to BF. BFing is so much easier because you dont have so much to carry around. i wanted to BF but couldnt. So formula is our only option really. But, im sick to death of explaining my choice to people when the ask me why i didnt breast feed, because its healthier. I know that its better for my baby and i know that its all around the better choice. But i was unable to. Formula these days is just as healthy and just as good of an option for babies. Im sick of standing up for myself about formula who cares as long as my baby is fed and healthy!!!!

My son is getting both bm and formula cause I'm Not producing enough.I was admitted in the hospital due to pre-eclimpsia and the doctors had to do an emergency c-section bcoz my blood pressure was getting dangerously higher. My little one was given Enfamil lipil 20 cal ready to feed formula. I was not able to pump right away cause any little activity would cause it to jump!. I stayed in the hospital for a week after giving birth and was able to pump only 3-4 times a day. After coming home Iwas able to build up the pumping to 5-6 times aday but my supply was not enough. Hence the need to supplement with formula. I've used Avent bottles with both my kids and I love them.

Amber have you talked to a la leche league leader? They are experts at helping moms figure out breastfeeding issues, they have lots of books to help and figure out what you can do to fix any problems. The website llli.org has a search for a leader in your area feature so you can find a leader close to you, they even have monthly meetings to help you out. Almost every breastfeeding problem can be fixed!

I was constantly having to supplement with formula. Daughter was just not satisfied with my bm. Was using the enfamil newborn but was giving her way too much gas and she was very fussy. We have switched her to the enfamil gentlease an she is doing much better. I would prefer good start but WIC here only covers enfamil. My daughter still doesn't seem satisfied after feedings a lot of the time though so I will be talking to the doctor about that at her 8w visit. We tried the breastflow bottles but she would just leak it out of her mouth and collapse the outter nipple and get frustrated. We are using the ventair wides now and she likes those. I still nurse her a few times a day an will continue until there is nothing left for her to get. My son had latch issues so I really wanted to be successful at bf this time but it just didn't work out. Im bummed about it but dont have anything against formula. Kid has to eat.. lol

I have Gavyn on President's Choice brand formula with added iron and Omegas 3 & 6. It's $17.99 per can in comparison to $28.99 for the same-sized Enfamil A+ and Nestle Good Start. My first baby is/was extremely healthy using the same thing (including the toddler one until she was 17 months old as a supplement) whereas Good Start made her really sick. I'm using both Gerber and Avent bottles

With my last 2 babies they have been on formula due to me having my both breast removed in 2008 cause of breast cancer.
I use Target Brand formula with both kids. Raiden did really well last yr with it (he is 15 mo's old now and on whole milk) Elyas has been having issues with spitting up and throwing up so we went to Target Brand Soy formula then he got constipated.
So now we are using have of the regular brand of Target formula and the Soy and working out so much better.
For 2 lbs of regular Target brand formula it is around
$20.00. For just 1 lbs of Similac it is around $25.00. And for Soy Target brand formula for 1 lbs it is around $13.65. Huge money savers and even the dr says these are just as good as the name brands.

Mines started to drink formula since day one because after the c-section my milk wasn't decending and they really needed to eat. They are having Nutrilon and seems to work just fine but is kinda expensive.
As for bottles, we are using Dr. Brown's as well.
i don't mind bottle feed since anyone can help, specially when double trouble decide to wake up starving at the same time :)

What a great series of questions! I had so many issues breastfeeding, and I recently wrote about them on my blog. Check out my MOM blog post called Crying Over Spilled Milk: My Breastfeeding Woes here: http://xiomaramaldonado.weebly.com/1/pos...

Here's an excerpt:
Whoever created the expression “No use crying over spilled milk” obviously never pumped breast milk. Once, I tipped a bottle while attempting to put a nipple on it. Two ounces of electrically pumped breast milk pooled brightly against the black leather couch. I cried. HYSTERICALLY. I had spent thirty minutes stoically enduring nipple pain for two (measly) ounces just to spill them! My very hungry one-week-old baby and I shared a round of tears.

my twins are on good start gental formula cause thats what i get from WIC. it saves my over 200$ a month. i tried to BF for the first two weeks but one baby wouldnt latch the other wouldnt stay latched and i constantly had a baby nursing never got a break had poor supply of milk and i never got sleep. so after 2 weeks i gave up and went to formula. now everyone else can help feed them so i can get some rest and they can bond too. plus for the last 2 weks ive been adding rice cereal to their bottles and they dont spit up nearly as much maybe 1 or 2 times a day and they are sleeping better and longer

I LOVE formula. I tried to breastfeed my first child and had no support so I gave up after a week...he was PERFECTLY healthy and did great!
So when Miss Rylie was born, I tried to breastfeed but she was SOO tiny and her mouth was super small so I had to stop and didn't have to time to pump. So formula again..and she is 100% perfectly healthy!
She is on Enfamil AR because she has acid reflux. She also takes medicine and has stuff added to her milk, but the AR has been best for her!!
She uses Dr Brown's bottles. They can be a bit of a pain to clean with all the parts but she gets NO air with them and does perfect! We tried a few other kinds that don't take so much to clean EVERY time, but she defintely loves the Dr Browns, so we're sticking with them :)
I wanted to breastfeed with both but am thrilled with how great both babies have done on formula and how EASY it is. Plus everyone else gets to bond with her as well..although mommy still has the best bond with her!
If we have a third child, he/she will be formula fed from the start.
My kids have been healthier than a lot of my friend's breastfed children so while I also believe in a way it is best, fomula is right for us and we love it :-)
