First born's 1st Birthday

My husband and I are both born and raised in Minnesota. However, my husband is currently stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our first born daughter in the 3rd grandchild for my parents, but the 1st grandchild for his parents.
My question is... how did you other military families who are stationed far away from family do the first birthday? We already have a trip planned to go home for a wedding two months AFTER she turns 1. So, we really don't want to take two trips home in that short of a period. However, both sides of the family want to celebrate her 1st birthday with us. I am just looking for some advice, because I am torn on what to do!

Have your own birthday party at home and video it to send to the grandparents. Or, you can have them call in on Skype during the party, to get the feel that they are there! If your family wants to do something special again when you go home, then let them.

The harsh reality of military life is that sometimes family will have to miss milestones such as birthdays, Christmases, etc. Make them feel like you are making an effort to keep them updated and involved, and they will be happy with that! I've found that sometimes our parents understand more than we give them credit for. And they are happy with the little things. Have them send a special birthday outfit for him to wear on his birthday, or send their own taped message to your little one. That's something he can keep forever, and watch late when he's an adult.
