Hi everyone!
I'm from Germany and we want to visit our family there in March. My husband and i have a 4 year old boy and a 2 year old girl and i'm 13 weeks pregnant with our 3rd.

Anyways, we are stationed at Lackland AFB and they do have Space A available here but only with Cargo plains.
... how will that work with kids for like a 8-9 hour flight? What about the noise? I'm sure at least my daughter will not keep the ear plugs in. And what to do with them during that time?
My husband said he'll take over with the kids but i'm not sure about all this. It seems like a lot to deal with.....

So ladies, i just want to hear your experiences with this. Maybe it will help me feel more comfortable taking this trip.

Thank you

Well when my children were that age it was honestly wonderful going on space A flights!! Mind u this was a while ago. Just bring them things to do..color cars etc. I had to do it from Japan alone a few times..it wasn't that bad!! They seem to entertain themselves. And honestly with the noise I loved it cuz u could hear the kids scream or cry!! lol And the crew were great too!! I remember my son was maybe 3 and we were on a C130 and my daughter was about a year old..the flight crew actually took my son up to where the pilots were and let him see Hawaii as we were landing!! He that that was just awesome!! Get maybe a set of head phones for ur oldest that might work better..the ones like the crew wear the big ones..the ear plugs are a pain in the butt to put in!! maybe for your daughter too...lollipops for the take off of coarse and a little benadryl to get them sleepy would be good too!! ha ha lots of snacks..crackers juice..sometimes they have meals u can purchase for the flight!! I hope this helps!! Have fun with it!!

I gotta call the terminal and ask about the water thing... i hope we can take some on board... i know we can take snacks but i'm not sure what exactly is allowed.
I will also check out the pharmacy for ear plugs and try them out before we fly.

Thanks ladies, you've both helped me a lot!

Hey Natalie.

Our plane didnt had any foods or drinks so we had to take some with us or buy the lunch packet for 5 dollars. They even didn't wanted to let me take warm water in a thermo for my sons formula. My husband needed to talk them into it sence they dont have any warm water on the plain. But as long u have your husband you will be fine.

I used baby plug ins they have those here in PA at the pharmacy. DVD is a good idea we had that too.

Thank you Jill!

I think i'm gonna buy a portable DVD player and bring a bunch of DVD's for them and maybe a new toy each for the kids that they only get to use on the trip...

Don't they have ear plugs for babies or so at Babies'r'us? I think i'm gonna head there this weekend and find out.

What do you do in a C5? That's where the passengers are on the 2nd story and the cargo and crew on the 1st?

Can we bring drinks on the plane? My hubby used to work with planes and he told me they should have water but i don't want any of us to get dehydrated..... with the new regulations i'm not sure how it works with the military planes....

I flew from Okinawa, Japan to Elmendorf AFB in Alaska this past June. We were on a Cargo plane and I was 20 weeks pregnant and traveling alone with my 18 month old. They cut the ear plugs in half and gave us bandaids to put over her ears....this still only lasted temporarily...but I honestly took mine out after a few hours as they were not comfy to keep in and I think you just got used to the noise...I would dress in layers as the temperature varies greatly...it will get really cold then they'll blast the heat for a few minutes..etc. They did provide us with some blankets and pillows which was nice. There is plenty of room to put a blanket down and let little ones play, or just let bigger kids romp around a bit. I would bring some toys. and also I think we were on a c17 and that had electric outlets so I could plug my laptop in and my daughter could watch dvds. Of course she couldn't hear them because it was super loud in there and she didn't know how to use headphones. Bring food/drinks with you because they don't serve you anything. We were able to buy a bagged lunch for like $5 which had fruit, sandwich, chips, and a soda, and i think a candy bar. I handled one baby by myself while pregnant with no problem...and there was a girl I helped out who had an 18-20 month old and 6 month old twins and she was travelling alone. She pulled it off without a hitch too. So if you have your hubby with you, you will probably be fine! Good luck!

Hey Natalie

im from germany also and we actually fly only Space A flights home. Its just so much cheaper. Last time my kids were 2 and 5 and they actually love it because they dont have to sit still like in the commercial planes. They were playing ball and run circles because its a lot of space in there.

I have to tell you its very loud. We couldnt talk to each other because u cant hear anything. If you guys lucky and its a nightflight they will sleep anyway. Its also very cold in those planes. We take blankets or sleeping bags with us and dress warm.

So hope i could help you out and you guys dont have a too stressed flight.
