My husband soon to be ex has severe ADHD not controlled by anything...... My son has very viloent outburst w/ me, and others. I have to supervise him carefully, he is very reckless w/ his behavior...." Consistantly running, as driven by a motor" Any parenting advice for this new mom?

My son is 9, and was diagnosed as ADHD with impulsivity at 4. I tried the medications, but hated the side effects so much more than the ADHD! Eventually, it was suggested to me that we see a Palmer Specific chiropractor. After seeing one of the violent explosions that my son had at me after I held his arm to get him to calm down, the chiropractor asked if I'd ever tried a gluten-free diet? I had never heard of it, so he gave me a book about it - I tried it just on my own, and on the second day I saw SIGNIFICANT change! He stopped having violent outbursts when touched, he made eye contact and had a full coversation. I was amazed - we have been following a gluten free diet for 2.5 yrs now. Once his body was healed from the toxicity of the gluten in his body (after 1 yr) he had the first growth spurt ever (1.5 inches in 2 wks!), plus then we were able to start seeing amazing results with things like supplements of fish oil, organic fruits and veggies.... If their body is still being flled with whatever foods they are allegic to, all the supplements in the world wont help! We just recently started seeing a nutritionist, who fund out what his food allergies where, put him on supplements of amino-acids, and started oral -detoxification. Now we are really seeing chages!! My son is finally able to control his impulses completely, he can sit still and finish a task at school, he can interact socially with others without annoying or hurting them! It has been a long hard road, but the most amazing results completely and totally came from having his blood analyzed for food allergies, and detoxifying from those foods! Best part - no side effects! I ask you to please not just medicate him, check out food allergies, I really wish I had found this out sooner! Best of luck to you in this heart breaking situation.

My daughter was diagnosed at age 7 and she is almost 12. She is on Daytrana and I love it. She has the impulsive issue also, but we use her diet to help control that. She has a Very Low sugar and we have all natural stuff in the house. She is good with her diet, she knows when she has eaten something wrong, and so do we. Right now her hormones are kicking up so we are getting quite the mouth and impulsive behavior from her. After many meds we are quite blessed to have her under control. Talk to her dr, and explore diet their are many things that will help your son. Take it one day at at time and ask many questions. Knowledge is power. Good Luck

My son is 14 years old...he was diagnosed with ADHD w/impulsivity when he was 7 years old. It has been a long, hard road. Many people tell you whats best for your child, but your the one living it..For us, he must have medication to help control his behavior. Once, we found the right medication and dosage he was much better..

We have just resently have had to reevaluate his meds., after being on Adderal for several years it stopped working...so we have had some tough days this year trying out other medication and dosage.

Hang in there, Jennifer

You could do a trial of the natural stuff (google natural remedies for ADHD) - and see - but ultimately, I recommend medication - it has saved our family!!!

I have two kids with ADHD. I have done sooooo much research making sure I knew all the options for treatment. We have tried a variety of medicines for our daughter to find one that worked for the ADHD and had minimal side affects. My son doesn't have ADHD as bad and also doesn't have the side affects that my daughter was experiencing. The best thing that we have done was the Feingold diet. I have become such a supporter as the great affects have become so noticable for my kids. I don't plan on taking them off their meds anytime soon, but in combination with the diet we are doing great 24/7...unless we screw up on the diet....then my daughter has her anger and impulsive problems come back to visit us. Good Luck!

Welcome to my world!! Finally to talk to someone who is going through the same as me. My dd,age 8, is the same way. She has gone as far as to hit, choke, her little sister, throw shoes and other things at my MIL, and pulled a butcher knife on her older sister. She is on medication and a therapist comes to the house. She has a med check next tuesday with her psychiatrist. I'm looking at getting her more testing for bi-polar and any kind of personality disorder, they run in the family. I want to change one of her meds anyway, since if she does have bi-polar, it will cause more manias. Inever thought of going homeopathic but if it would work better than meds and insurance would pay for it I would definately try/tried it.

He said to put my son on DHA Vitamins for Brain Health, I know a Homeopathic Specialist that does oils for children, and adults with ADD/ ADHD, His provider said it couldn't hurt to try it. I was going to ask him about Brain Training with a Neuro Therapist, My niece has ADD, and my sister is doing it with her, it seems to be working.

What does your healthcare provider recommend? I tried supplementing with fish oil, flaxseed oil, vitamins and other "natural" remedies, but they weren't helpful. I just recommend that you do a lot of reading and make a decision in the best interest of your son and your family! It's hard. hard to medicate, but sometimes it's really just the best answer.
