My daughter is 9 years old and as long as I can remember she has always lacked in self esteem.

Dispite all the attention her father & I shower her with and all the compliments recieved from

us and others. Doesn't seem to boost anything.

She is a very smart little girl and always has been excelling in reading and math at school. However we have noticed that she is getting lazy. I wonder if it is really laziness or lack of confidence that she can do it. She won't talk about it with us

Does anyone have any adivice. ???? Dad & I are beating our heads against the wall in frustration.

With an only, the guilt strikes both ways.  Either you spend too much time focused on your only, or you spend too much time trying to get them to play/work on their own. If, as you say, she's been like this for as long as you can remember, chances are the family dynamic did not cause it.  It would seem to me more likely to be a temperament issue.  I hope the book will provide some insight.

Thanks, I can't help but wonder if her lack of self confidence is something we are not doing right.  She of course is our center of attention but maybe we are missing something.

Positive Pushing: How to Raise a Successful and Happy Child by James Taylor.  This is my suggestion because it is a wonderful resource for all different stages.  Confidence does not happen to be one of my child's weaknesses, but I know this book discusses that subject numerous times.
