I don't know what to do so I'm reaching out to you all who hopefully one of you has encountered this already….
My son is 7 going on 8. Very confident and strong young man. However lately he has not wanted to go outside because he doesn't want to become darker "black". He wants to be "tan" as he says "brown not black" these are his words. I tried to explain that he will get darker every time he is out in the sun and its nothing to be ashamed of but he gets upset and asks why he is so dark and his brother is light brown. Now its to the point where he saying "I wish I was just white and not black". This is a very big problem and is becoming a very serious concern. I want him to be proud of who he is and what they both mean but he won't even discuss it with me anymore without getting upset. If you have any thoughts or suggestions I would love to hear them. Thank you!

Depending on where you are maybe take him to an african american museum or someplace that showcases black acheivements. Show why he should be proud to be not only white but black to. Its something that as a mom i kmow is hard to deal with because all we see is our pretty baby.
