My name is Amy Brown. I am visually impaired legally blind. I live in West Reading PA. I am 43 years old. When I was 4 months the doctors found a brain tumor the size of an egg. It messed up my optic nerves in both eyes. They did remove all the brain tumor but they said I will have scar tissue. I could not walk till I was three nor could I talk till I was three. My parents took me to phsycal therapu. I went to Overbrook School for the blind in Philadelphia in 1973 untill 1987. The doctors thought I would loose my sight but at ten years old it stabled and stayed that way for 33 years. I found out at 16 years old I have an underactive thyroid dsiorder and am on medications for that. At 21 years old I found out I have allergies. I am allergic to grass, weeds, mold, polland, dust mites, Cats and lillacs. At age 30 I had my gull bladder taken out. I forgot some things. I had 4 eye surgeries at a young age. I had my tonsils out when I was 7. Had croup alot. Was in and out of hospitals for that. I got married in 1998 to my husband Frank and have a boy who is 8 soon will be 9. I wanted to come on this group and give moral support. I also go to Alanon meetings I was verbally and mentally abused by my parents and my one set of Grandparents. I am grateful to be alive. My husband also has health problems. But we work together. He has 12 different types of seizures, blood clots and mini strokes.

No I do not work. I am a stay at home Mom. My husband can not workand when I would work his checks went down so it was not worth it. I am glad to be home especially in the summer and take care of my son. I take care of the house and my husband and son. That is enough work in itself. I also volunteer at my sons school. I am on the PTA and do other things. I am on the West Reading Crime watch, I help at the fire company as a semi active volunteer. My son is a big help to me tells me if a car is coming and what not. If I need help with steps or what ever. He is a big help to me and the love of my life. I also go to Alanon meetings. When I can get a ride as well as another 12 step program. My husband will not watch our son while I go to meetings so sometimes it is hard to get there.

Wow, sounds like you have had your share of challenges, Amy. Thank you for being so open. It i always good to hear from adults who live with blindness every day. Do you work outside the home? I know that caring for your 8-year-old can be a full-time job in and of itself.
