Hello Zuri,

I am so very sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis. I know that it is very devasting news that changes your life forever. I have been there, and I want to reassure you that it is not the end of the world. Our son was diagnosed at 5 yrs old and he is 7 now.

If there is any "good" time to get diabetes, its definately in this day and age. There is so much advancement with the technology and controlling the condition, that we have all the tools we need to take the best possible care of our children that we can.

It has taken us 2 years to finally get a good handle on the condition and how to control it. Its not easy, and you must be vigilant. Are you currently working with a diabetes clinic in your area? They should be giving you all the information you need and answering all your questions and concerns.

I would be more than happy to help you as much as I can with what I have learned. Please post any specific questions or concerns you may have.

Most important of all take time out for yourself to deal with this the way you need to. Its a devastating "loss" of your son's a death, and you need to "mourn" that loss in your own way.

The good news is that he is young, alive and impressionable. You can make a differnce in his life and teach him all the healthy habits he needs to live as "normal" and good of a life as possible. I'm not going to lie, there is a lot of work and monitoring involved, but don't be can do it!

Sorry to hear about your son. Type 1 diabetes is not fun. Every child is so different and every child reacts differently. My son has had type 1 for almost 4 years he was 6 at Dx. It is hard but it does get less confusing. Let your son know that he can do anything he wants to do. Do not let diabetes stop him. Best of luck to you.
