22 year old college student seems depressed

We have two sons aged 22 and 18 both at the same university which is about a 1.45 domestic plane flight away from where we live. The 22 year old is in his third year of a double degree and he has always been positive and up beat until he came home at the end of last semester prior to Christmas with a very different attitude. He failed his papers saying they were too hard and seemed quite negative and very up and down mood wise and lost his confidence. He seems to be jelious if his younger brother who has just completed his first year successfully and whose girlfriend will be attending this university in the coming year. Also he seems to be blaming and finding fault in everything my husband and I say or do at the moment. He has never been like this before and it's very concerning as it's out of character behaviour. It seems to be related mainly to having a bad year studywise but my husband and I are not sure what to do and don't want to send him back down there again unless we can get to the bottom of what the problem is. Any suggestions? They were also sharing a car down there which turned into a nightmare as they couldn't do this without fighting. Concerned parents.

I wonder if your son feels like he has dug a hole that he can't get out of and he doesn't know what to do. He may well be taking his fears out on you. And little brother succeeding while he is struggling just adds salt to the wound. this book might be of help... http://amzn.to/2v6LueY
