Finding a homebirth midwife

Hey Everyone! I just joined this group, hope it's okay if I jump right in.

My husband and I just found out that we are expecting our second child, and we are so excited. I am very interested in homebirth, but I am very frustrated with the fact that you can't just open up the phone book and find someone who is skilled and experienced and will assist in a homebirth.

Do any of you have any advice? What is the best way to go about finding a homebirth practitioner?

Thanks in advance!

Wow, you posted a while ago. Where you are will make the difference. I'm in Ontario, Canada, and you just have to go to any midwifery place and put your name on the waiting list. If you get in and you're healthy, they will gladly attend your birth at home. (if you need a c-section or have to go to the hospital to give birth for some reason, they will still be there with you.) They are all affiliated with some hospital, so you'll go to that one in case of emergency. The problem is getting a midwife in the first place. It seems like everybody wants one, and there aren't enough. I only got in because my mom is friends with one of the midwives, and I was already 7 months pregnant. I had a home birth, and it was wonderful. I wish you the best, whether you give birth at home or in hospital!
