Formula vs. Solid food

Hi Moms,
My son is a preemie born at 32 and half weeks. He is almost 6 months now. He eats very good and enjoys having solid food (like rice cereal) in a bowl. My concern is- I've heard that he should have at least 32oz of formula/day in order to start solid food. But, he takes 24oz. per day. He almost weighs 16lbs. What is your input in regards to amt of formula intake?

Thank you for sharing,

My 13 mo old was born at 34 1/2 weeks, We started her on solids around 6 months, but our pediatrician said to hold off until she was 6 months adj. age. Only because according to her, the little tummies just aren't ready yet, and my DD was having some gas issues. She now is on almost all solid food, and is doing great. I really think it's up to the baby!

From what I have read, the most important factor in starting your baby on solids is his or her personal readiness for solids. Usually this doesn't happen until around 6 months (corrected age), because their guts just aren't ready until then to digest the solid food. I didn't start my 30-weeker on solids until around 8.5 months, when she started literally grabbing things off my plate. She was clearly ready at that point.

It's up to you, but if it was me, I'd hold off on solids for a bit. Also keep in mind breastmilk or formula should be the primary source of baby's nutrition for the first year of life. Solids have less calories ounce per ounce than milk, so if you're concerned about weight, I'd focus more on the formula at this point.

It sounds like he's doing good! If you think he's not getting enough talk to your pediatrician and see what he/she says. My little one is 7mths (5mths adjusted) and his doctor just put him on solids about two weeks ago and he's taking between 6-7 4oz bottles a day and eating about 3 solids a day. Maybe the solids are filling him up so he's needing less formula

Hi Fray,
I started my little girl on solids @ 4 months as per my doctors indtructions. Today she is a big healthy 10 month old eating 3 meals a day with 4 formula bottles a day.
If you are concerned about the intake, try giving him calcium enriched foods like yoghurt, which babies absolutely love!!

My 28 weeker is only now taking stage 1 solid foods well at 11 months (8 months adjusted age) because she just wasn't ready before. We even had involvement from a speech pathologist because her occupational therapist thought that there might be an issue with her tongue control, but in the end it turned out that she just needed a little more time.

She's only drinking about 26 to 32 oz of formula a day and the doctors are perfectly happy with that. Every child is individual and as long as they are gaining weight at an acceptable rate, that's what matters.
