Take your time when introducing solids.  I waited until my 28-weeker was 6 months old and even then it took a very long time before she could eat well.  Something about all the vent tubes makes it harder on preemies to swallow.

My daughter was also born 10 weeks early.  My family dr. and pediatriacian told us to weight until she was 8 months old (really 6 months if you go byoriginal due date).  They told me to add 6 months to her due date and then to give her solids.  I wanted to give them to her earlier and I did try, but she wasn't ready.  She's 10 months old now and we've done cereal but she's just starting on veggies and fruit.

Our nutritionist told us to add six months onto our twins original due date, they were originally suppose to be born on the 1st of august of last year therefore he told us not to feed them cereal until the beginning of february. One of my twins did start to eat when he actually turned six months old though because he was about the 50th percentile at his 6 month needles and was more than ready to start. You'll know when the time comes, they let you know they are ready by chewing, watching you eat much more attentively or not being satisfied with milk or formula along. Good luck=)

Hi, I had twin prem babies, 9 weeks early, one of them was showing all the signs - opening mouth when others were eating and she started some stewed apple and baby porridge about 4 1/2 months, the other didn't really start til she was nearly 6 months. They both good eaters now. There wasn't much advice around and I just followed my instincts. Good luck.

My son was born @ 35 weeks and he only measured in the size of a 31 week old. I had the same questions and my ob/gyn told me to wait 6 months to start or a month earlier for rice cereal. My family doctor told me the same but to use my own judgement if needed. I had to start him on beginner rice cereal at 3 months since he was drinking 6 ounces of formula every 3 hours and still seemed hungry..he was cranky, wouldnt sleep, etc..so I tried to take a tiny bit of pablum and I made it VERY liquidy..it worked like a charm and he slept well..now he is 1yr and 9 months, healthy, and eats like a pig..hehe..so I would just say to use your own judgement..no one knows your baby more than you..you might be surprised, I was...

I waited for my daughters doctor telling me to introduce them. They were born at 27 weeks and 4 days. Why dont you call your baby's doctor to see what they say. Stuff that applies with full-term babies doesnt apply with preemies.
