I was wondering how you all disclipine your children? My son will not sit for a time out, i put him in his room and he destroys it. I have recently had to take all the toys out of his room because he put his guitar threw the wall!! I could not even believe that my 3 year old put something right threw a wall!! Any suggestions on what works for you?

Hi Kristi, I have a 6 year old son who has spd and we are working on Tantrums as well. Time out do not work for us. Mine seems so strong that it is hard to carry him to his bedroom. I guess the only thing that works is using a timer that he can watch or hear and taking away something that he likes. Everyday is different and some days this works and other days, the timer does not. Good luck

Time outs only work for me because I purchased a visual timer. Those are a life saver for everything.

Oh and I forgot to say my 3.5 yr old Grandson will throw a toy or toys too when he his really frustrated, or overtired. So yes they will do that and he has Aspergers and SPD, and he can be aggressive at times.

For us time out does not seem to work. Taking away a favorite toy, or if he throws a toy taking away that toy does help. So does having a cool down/sensory break area in a room, is helpful. You have to say to the child before the meltdown reaches a point of no return, do you need a break? And then the child goes to an area that has things in it that help him/her calm down.

A good book that I am reading right now is "Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments" Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns.

It's geared toward schools and helping the child, but I also see ways that I can apply their suggestions in the home setting.

Good luck!
