Hi everyone. I just stumbled upon this group. I have a daughter who just turned 2 and it is believed that she has this disorder. We're still in the early phases of looking into what's going on with her delays and "odd" behaviors, but hopefully I can learn a little more from this group.

Sure. It is a lifesaver! They also have Parenting a Child With Sensory Processing Disorder by Auer and Blumberg but the Out-of-Sync Child is the best. I also recommend trying to get to Children's or something similar to get some testing done. We waited 2 years and wish we had done it sooner. We went with the free testing with the county and the school system. From everything I have heard, going to one of the big centers gives you a much more detailed and accurate diagnoises. (Sorry I can't spell ;) )

Anyway, know that we are all here for you and your family! OT & ST Therapy helps so much!

Thanks! I'll have to look into that book. Anything to help me better understand her.

Welcome! I am so glad you found us! Those of us with SPD kids can really relate to what you're going through. Here's my story. People told me it was " a phase", "he'll grow out of it", etc etc but I knew something wasn't right. The Doctor agreed with me. We had him tested and he has apraxia (spelling?), gross and fine motor delay, severe speech delay and sensory integration issues. I am so glad we had him tested. He has been having occuapational therapy and speech therapy and it is helping. We are going to University of Virginia's Kluge Center for more evaluations. These are the people that write the books, so we should get a clearer picture of what's going on. I don't know if you have this book, but I really reccomend it: The Out-of-Synce Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz, M.A. It is REALLY helpful and helps parents recognize and cope with SPD. Hope it helps! Hang in there! Please let me know how things go!
