My 9 year old has been diagnosed with High Function Autism and SPD. Everyone I turn around she screams when one of in the family come behind her, not to scare just walking by or if she just so happens to turn around and notice we are there she screams. Im afraid of scaring her to death. I know that's impossible but has anyone dealt with this situation!

This may seem impractical or annoying, but I used to have an anklet that jingled in high school and everyone always knew I was coming. I know that everyone might not want to wear a bell or something like it, but it could work, at least at home... And it would be easier than the light. It was just a tiny tinkle of a sound, not harsh. Good luck with finding a solution.

@Michelle, thank you for responding. I am trying to find someone to rig up a soundless light everywhere in the house where if she is the room or anywhere and someone steps on the sensor, the light will turn on and alert her that someone is coming. But how do you do that in an apartment? @Julie, I don't know what a social story is, can you help me with that. Thanks to you both!

I haven't but since no one else has jumped in maybe I can offer an idea. Is there a signal or something that family can give to let her know they are there? If your daughter hears a signal of some sort that she recognizes then she will not be surprised hopefully. That's a tough one.
