Hi there, I am so happy to have found this place. We have recently had our 5 year old daughter "officially" diagnosed with SPD. I self diagnosed her a little less than a year ago. I have always known something was quite right, but couldn't put my finger on it. I kept talking to Pediatricians and no one could give me any suggestions. After I accidentally came across SPD in a VERY small excepert in a book I was ready, I knew that we were on to something. I started doing more and more research and everything I would read, I kept saying "That is Lilly!". We have started her on OT in the past couple of weeks, and are attempting to make changes in our family's lifestyle to cope better for and with her. I know that she requires different coping skills then my other two children (one of which is Lilly's twing, and does not exibit any symptoms of SPD).

Anyhow, I am THRILLED to know others know what we face on a daily basis. How some days are good and others are not. And that my child isn't a bad kid or crazy, just has SPD.

I do have one question. She is hyper sensitive to smells, and we can't take her to a lot of restraunants, because she'll throw up the minute we walk in, it's lovely. Does anyone have suggestions on how we can better manage this??

Thanks!

WELCOME!!! I am so glad you found some kindred spirits in here! That's what we're here for... I started the site b/cause no one "got it"... I was tired of "he'll grow out of it" or "you're making a big deal out of nothing" etc etc .... This has been a breath of fresh air for me.

Our OT had Logan do smell therapy because he refuses to eat most food based on smells. You sit down at the table with a plate of food and reward them for getting near, for staying by it, for touching it, for trying it and of course for eating it... I am very sensitive to chemicals and found by avoiding them for the most part and going slowly into a building I can usually overcome it... sometimes I cough so bad I throw up. But its getting better... hang in there!
