I just wanted to share for those of you using sign languge with your speech delayed children. We used the Signing Time DVDs to learn sign at home and they were excellent. Many public libraries have them and there is a website if you want to buy them. I can't tell you how much it helped my son be able to express himself before he could talk. He had a development evaluation to get speech services. The woman testing him was hard of hearing and she said he had a sign vocabulary above most deaf children his age. I am sure it was due to the success we had with Signing Time. We watched together so I could learn the signs too, and it was great together time for us.

opps... On the front you have a square with "it's time to" and they or you can pick what activities its time for, what to eat, etc. Its another visual way to communicate. Thanks again for your tip, I'll check it out!

I will have to try them. Logan has some difficulty with his hands (motor planning issues) so the ST at UVA's Kluge Center recommended the auxiliary device, the hand held computer that they punch the pictures and its says the sentence. We're looking into that too. Insurance is a pain. But I'll look into that. They said to keep up with the signing and the word book (also called picts) we made. Have you made one? If not, its a 3 ring binder with plastic dividers. On each divider you stick velcro dots. Then you get these laminated squares (with velcro on back) from the ST that have thirsty, hungry, all sorts of foods and activities on them. On the front of the binder you put a strip of velcro then

We don't use pecs at home but I use them all the time at work. They are a wonderful communication tool.
