My son is 13, at the age of 8 he was classified as mildly retarded. He would display anger by yelling and at times shove his brother who is 3 years older than he is. Over the last few months he had gotten aggressive. He now hits, punches and even bite his brother. Last weekend was the worse, he put his hand up as if he were going to hit me, he yelled he hated me and this was because I told him it was time to take a shower. He said he did it because I made him mad. I am getting worried, he is not on any type of medication but should he be? She I have him re-evaluated

Yes!do it now!medication hopefully and a school that fits his needs. My neice never got any help except from her parents. Now, she is a monster and an extreme danger to others. Start now. U owe it to him and yourself, also the rest of your family.

Had you reduced or stopped disciplining him because he's retarded and can't help it? If he's been allowed to run rampant, of course it will escalate over time. Most likely he can help it. If he's only mildly retarded, he may be slower than normal people, but should still be able to pick up on how to behave. Yes, he will probably be more prone to throwing tantrums, but that doesn't mean he should get away with murder. Just adjust your discipline style to make sure he understands what he's in trouble for and that there will be consequences.

If it's been a while since his development was assessed, it probably wouldn't hurt to have him re-evaluated and ask the doctor whether medication would be necessary, or what recommendations they can make for this behavior.
