My 16 year old son gets upset very easily, the littlest thing sets him off... he will throw things, break things, punches the walls, etc., plus he is so disrespectful to me, he is so nasty to me and I have no idea why... please help because I have no idea what to do anymore...

Thank you for the tips. I wish my teen was willing to see a psychologist, as you mention it will only help is he is willing to.

I remember when I was a teen and just the sound of my mom's voice would send me into overload. To this day, I can't give a reason why except that anger from other situations built up and I directed it to her. By my twenties, that angry period had past.
Now I am experiencing moments with my own teen and it is a new world for me to be on the receiving side rather than the giving. Having learned from my mom, stay calm (somehow), observe the rage levels, try not to engage when the level is high, keep voice low or soft, say no more than 3-4 words and then disengage. The key is to get your child to listen. You may have 1- 2 seconds; therefore, only say key words (no speeches or ranting).
Counseling is a good idea, but it only works if your child is willing.
