Help! My daughter just got her period and is now saying that she does not want to go to camp next summer because she is afraid to get her period at camp, does not want to continue with swim team since she is afraid to use tampons, etc. How do I get her past this fear and assure her that she should be able to do all the activities she was doing before?

My daughters both went through this, too, especially my youngest. The more I tried to reassure them tampons were the answer, the more adamant they were they would never use something so gross and they were quitting swimming. I gave up coaxing every month to try using a tampon. Tampax makes a "slender" size which isn't always available at larger supermarkets, but can often be found at drug stores. I also bought some KY jelly to use at first on the tip to ease the first attempts. I pointed out that millions of women have successfully used tampons for swimming (including every menstruating girl on every high school and college swim team), then demonstrated while clothed the proper angle and showed a diagram, and told them I was leaving the tampax in their closet for whenever they were ready to try it some month. My youngest daughter was invited to a birthday swim party for when she thought she'd have her period. We discussed her options: don't go to the party, go to the party and don't swim ("but MOM, everyone will suspect I have my period!") or practice using a tampon with KY jelly now so you feel comfortable wearing one to the swim party. She stormed off but a few days later told me she thought she'd gotten one in ok so thought she was ok to RSVP to the party. My older daughter used to take individually wrapped disposable feminie hygiene wipes with her on school overnight camping/backpacking trips when unable to shower.

Maybe take her to the OB GYN and have them talk to her since they are the pros on females. GOOD LUCK!!!

Use the TAMPAX slim, give her a mirror and show her the pictures...
Its all new now, and soon she will get over it.

I'm the same too my daughter wants to pack in dance and gymnastics because she is scared that your can tell when she's on her period . She has did 4 competitions while she has been on her period but said she felt very uncomfortable wearing a leotard every time I looked at her she was always sat still not practising . However she has did much better at competitions while being on her period because it has made her do the routine faster as she was scared you could tell she was on xx

I went through the same thing with my daughter, She is a martial artist with a white gee (uniform), has to swim at school for gym and on the track team.. I bought Playtex sport tampons regular size and brought her to her pediatrician to have a talk with her on how safe they were and to assure her she would be more comfortable and not to be afraid of them. Sometimes having it come from a professional makes them feel more secure. How this helps it did for me.
