Daughter had boy hiding in bedroom

My daughter is 14 years old her father tied two weeks ago, she was very close to him and is devastated. We had been divorced for years, however remained very close. I have been home with my girls since this happened. I had to go a work function from 7 pm to 9 pm. My girls have many male friends, however, the rule has been no friends over unless their step dad or I are home. I got home early and after my daughters behavior seemed odd I went to her room to find a boy trying to hide. I told him to leave now. My daughters (one was uninvolved as she was on her computer in her room and oblivious) stated the young man is gay and a good friend. My daughters also said " at least it wasn't her/ my boyfriend". Hmmmm... Both my girls have always been good kids and my daughter with the boy over said she just wanted to talk with her friend about dad ( a bit manipulative... ) I don't know what to do or say ... Punishment, talk, change the rule???? I normally would hash this out with my ex husband as we balanced each other as parents... Suggestions please.
