Daughter Worrying About Looks

My 14-year old daughter Brighton has always been considered the "cute" triplet by people outside our family. Her brothers both wore glasses since 1st grade, Tony always hated his hair, and Jonas is gaining weight, and she always felt that at least she'd be pretty. Now, she is going through a period of breaking out, and we just figured out today that she now needs glasses and braces and will be getting both on in about a month. She has been crying in her room for the past two hours about how she is going to be ugly. How do I let her know that she will still be who she was without seeming like I don't understand.

Braces and glasses at the same time is hard. Braces are temporary, and she will have prettier teeth afterward, so hopefully that won't be too bad for her. Get her a nice wire-rimmed pair of glasses that don't make a big impact on her face. Let her know when she gets older you might consider contacts (assuming her eyes are such that she can wear them). For the breaking out, it's just a matter of keeping her face clean, not touching it too often, maybe she needs a medicated face wash.

None of these things define her beauty. It's hard for her to understand right now, but beauty is more than skin deep. And as long as she behaves like a lovely lady, then she will be seen as attractive.
