does anyone know anything about antidepressants for a 13 yo?

My 13 yo teenage sons counselor believes he is depressed and should be started on antidepressants. His older sister just tried to commit suicide last month and accidently amputated her arm instead. I guess with a suicide attempt in the family it increases everyones risk. I am worried about starting my son on antidepressants at such a young age. His sister was on a large dose of SSRI's when she attempted suicide. Can anyone speak to medicating a young boy and to the increased suicide risk as a side effect?

I am so sorry your family is going through this tough time. You said your daughter amputated part of her arm. My gosh, that is so sad.

My God daughter who is 16 was on major anti-depressants last year and started cutting herself really bad and talking suicide, too, but not quite as severe as your daughter. Her Mom took her off of everything because of the horrible side effects. The doc wanted her daughter to stay on them. She might not be here if my friend had not taken her daughter off them. The drugs are not the answer.

Why is your daughter and son so depressed? Maybe it's something you can talk about as a family. My daughter gets very down, too, but I try to figure out the "why"; sometimes I have even met her best friend to find out what was actually going on with her. Their friends ALWAYS KNOW.

You are probably a great Mom; sometimes we have to be detectives, too, to get into their heads. Good Luck.

I have read an awful lot about the topic and my own feeling is- DONT DO IT!

Make any changes necessary to give him your full attention, thats what a depressed person needs. In my opinion of course. I hope that helps.
