My son is 14, He is the oldest of 4 boys and he is generally a great kid, funny and helpful. However school has always been a bit of a struggle for him and as he gets older his grades are about as bad as they can get. He loves going to school, but not to learn, to see his friends. He is the class clown. He does not turn in his class work, if he does complete his work it is all wrong, he cant sit still in class, always distracted, and he has an excuse for everything! The last 3 years he has failed. 7th grade twice and now he is in 8th grade and failing again. He says he don't understand, he is very unorganized and there have been several resources given to him to help but nothing helps, I don't know what to do!

As the mom of two kids (so far) with learning disabilities it sounds like your son could have something like this going on, hence the not taking school seriously (because he finds the work too difficult). The disorganization often goes hand it hand with a learning disability.

Your school should be able to help as all children are entitled to extra help when they have situations like this. Unfortunately sometimes it's difficult to get because of budgets or high demand, but you should talk to someone about possibly having him tested.

Although it's late in the day to be discovering a learning disability, it can turn children round when they are taught in a way that makes it understandable for them, and if they are generally nice kids, they often respond well to the support. As the work in school gets more and more difficult, he will definitely need the extra help. Good luck.

I agree with both comments!!! My son now 15 in 10th grade also has a learning disability and ADHD. My son was diagnosed in 2nd grade. And has greatly improved over the years w/IEPs and extended school years. We stopped taking meds for the ADHD when he was 13 and he still has some impulse control issues, but, he has learned things to help control most of the disruptive behavior. The IEP we have set in place for him has done wonders for not only his grades, but, his self esteem. You should contact the school immediately!!! There is no way he should have failed the 7th grade twice, without some kind of testing done. Hopefully you can get him the help he needs to succeed. Good Luck!!!!!
