My daughter is highly involved in marching band and indoor percussion groups. She makes band the priority of her life. It is more important than church, family, working, getting her license, etc. She will be starting college in fall. I asked her to take a break from band over the summer to focus on graduation, prom, getting a part time job and getting her license. She was not happy, but has so far complied. Now that winter band is coming to an end she is already talking about joining another indoor percussion group in the fall of next year, which will cost $2000, and is over an hour away from her college. I told her she should focus on college and joining college bands. I also told her money that she/we have should be put toward college tuition, not not band participation. I feel bad because she loves it. My fear is that she will lose focus in college, and I feel that borrowing money for college while spending this kind of money on an extra curricular is financially irresponsible. I know I am her mother and I should take some responsibility for her education costs, but shouldn't the student have to make some sacrifices as well? I'm I a horrible person for discouraging my daughter from joining this band?

Thank you for your feedback. She a great kid, I don't want to discourage her. I just need her to understand the financial aspect of things.

Maybe she can earn the $2000 as an incentive? Then tell her she has to keep her grades up so she can stay in the band. Do you know, does she intend to have a musical career in the future? Perhaps she is following her dreams!

If she's getting good grades, it sounds like you have a pretty good kid there who appears to be staying out of trouble :)
