My 16 year old son has a difficult time forming close friendships.

He voiced that he feels lonely at school and feels left out. I know that he's a great kid, but he's always been somewhat shy and withdrawn. I've been a single mother for most of his life and can't help but to think that part of the problem may be the lack of male presence.

Are there any big brother like programs that you could suggest?

Should I seek out a therapist?

Try getting him some Martial Arts classes. I used to be shy and withdrawn to, my parents put in martial arts classes and the classes helped me a lot. They showed me that I could do things I never thought I could do. I made friends with my class mates, most of who went to school with me. My instructors became like family, both my male and female instructors. It's also good to know self defense no matter what age. My mother and my younger brother both joined classes with me and we traveled to companions together. It made us a closer family. Try it, you might want to try it yourself.
