To a degree, I agree with Whitney, if it is something he enjoys and is good at, he should be encouraged. However, there also needs to be a balance. If it interferes with school, there needs to be some compromise. Also, it is important to read widely, as this is known to enhance literacy skills. Literacy skills become important in many areas of school, and only reading when it is necessary for a particular class is going to affect him negatively in the long term. Children should be doing some reading every night as this helps them learn to interpret texts and expand their vocabulary and comprehension.

So try to work out a compromise with him. Have a set amount of reading time he does each day (even if only 20 minutes), and then outside of that, I don't see a problem.

Freedom of expression. You should be encouraging him to do it. He could become very talented some day if he isn't already. Unless it's interfering with school work then that's a problem. But even then you should never stop him from doing it, just finds ways to compromise with school work first.
