Hi! My son is almost 14 years old and a rumor is spreading around about him like wildfire. It involves something he supposedly did with a girl (not that) but it is very hurtful and untrue. He told me that it wasn't true and the girl already has a bad rep and he does not like girls like that. At first I didn't know what to think. He is very open with me and we discuss everything. We usually go to church but haven't been there in about a month. Boy does he need it right now. How do I comfort him and how do we fix this rumor to fix his reputation? He is a very smart boy that has earned two scholarships already and I don't want his good name to be smeared. He already has a lot of drama to deal with because of our divorce. I don't want him to get hurt anymore.

I think at his age it's something he's going to have to deal with on his own. If kids are bullying him about it, he needs to go to an adult at the school about it, probably the guidance counselor would be the best bet. At his age, stepping in as his mom is probably going to do more harm than good. He has to learn to deal with these kind of situations on his own. My only exception to that would be if there are other parents getting involved, then I would only step in enough to defend him from the other parents, and no further.
Keep being there for him and talking to him. That's the best thing you can do for him.
