Need your advice on 14 yr old son's chronic "wait till the last minute" mentality.

Son has been in Gate since 3rd grade. Is chronically lazy, but knows since he is somewhat smart, he can do things at the last minute and still do relatively well. He is in a summer online math class that he finds difficult, yet has waited till the last minute and is now pressed for time. Even so, he is still lazy and has only this weekend to finish up. It is really irritating and I have had to step in and help. Doubtless knowing that Mom will swoop in and help at the last minute is an enabler. This results in a lot of stress for me since I am a worrier. Is failure the only possible cure? (ie, he must fail in order to learn his lesson, and maybe even then won't).

QUIT STEPPING IN

Yes, he'll continue to procrastinate because he knows you'll "help" him. How is he staying in GATE if he's not doing his own work, anyway?

Recommendation from me is to remove him from GATE, and let him sink or swim on his own, academically. Otherwise, you'll be "stepping in and helping" all the way through college.

I can't sustain it through high school. Have to stop being a helicopter mom. Thanks.
