Welcome to our little part of the world. I have a 15y/o daughter with similar issues. She does well in classes she enjoys (drama, English, science) and is failing in both Algebra and Spanish. Math has never been a strong subject for her and she hates the Spanish teacher (she claims is bigoted against non-hispanic students). I scheduled parent-teacher meetings with both teachers. We set up a monthly 'check in' arrangement. My teen knows this is happening, isn't happy about it, but realizes if she doesn't get her act together, she may not be able to graduate (now a freshman in HS). I've tried badgering, pushing, encouraging, and so far the only thing that is working is removal of privileges. No ipod, no cell phone, no internet, no girl friend sleepovers here or anywhere else. Our 'mom and me' monthly dates still happen because it's a good opportunity for me to connect with her, see where she is emotionally and just listen to her. Likewise our weekly 'family game night' where the TV goes off, we play board or card games and just have fun together. I was widowed when my girl was just a baby, so I'm a single mom too. Hard to know exactly what to do without knowing what is going on under the surface. The more you connect with him now, the more info you can get to find that out. Hope this helps.
