Hi I'm a 42 yo widower, I live alone with my 14 yo daughter,in NYC. We are not nudist family but we see going around the house without cloths quite natural, been doing it forever. Question is if you as moms think it's time to stop doing it now that she's a teen ? She very comfortable with it and I am too. Just want to read your opinion. Thanks Tony

Antonio, the time to stop doing it is when one of you, either you or your daughter, feel uncomfortable doing it. I noticed in another post that you don't necessarily go around nude, but in underwear.
Most normal people would agree that underwear is essentially the same amount of covering as a bathing suit, so really, even for those who may have an issue with nudity, I cannot see the issue there.

I personally like clothes and am not comfortable in just my skin. But hubby frequently lounges around the house in either just boxers or boxers and a shirt.
We have 3 children, boy (5), girl (3) and boy (10mos)

Obviously, if friends are coming over, then I'd suggest some regular clothes, but just lounging around the house, whether naked or partially dressed, as long as you are aware of the laws in your area (nudity around minors AND public nudity-make sure your curtains are closed :P), then there's really no issue.

And, as for you Nicole, Shawnn's right. As long as there's no inappropriate/sexual touching and as long as both are comfortable with it, there's really no harm. There are plenty of nudist families and communities in Canada and the USA, not to mention all over Europe. It's a perfectly acceptable lifestyle.
Hell, my family WASN'T into nudity or even under dressing at all while I was growing up. I lived with my grandparents. I almost never saw my grandmother in anything less than a tshirt AND sweatshirt. There were however, a couple of occasions where I walked in on my grandma changing, or where my grandpa forgot his clean clothes and booked it from the bathroom to his bedroom in nothing but his (tighty whitey) underwear.
Sure, it was uncomfortable at the time when it happened. But I was hardly scarred for life by the sight of my naked, or near to naked, grandparents. If that didn't scar me, when I WASN'T comfortable with nudity, I hardly think that this little girl will be scarred by something they're both comfortable with.

HERE'S 2 QUESTION FOR YOU to think about before you read the goods and bads of everyone else's opinions...

** If and when your wife was alive, did or would she allow your daughter to walk around the house naked with you present?

** If your daughter was to go stay with someone without you (no matter age, gender, or relation) for a night or longer, would you find it acceptable for her to walk around them naked?

If you answer YES then what you're conditioning your daughter to accept as OK could greaten the possibility that she will be taken advantage of and possibly raped or molested by someone around her at some point, if it hasn't happened already, and you will never know because she thought it was OK because it only started by walking around naked.

If you answer NO then you should stop immediately and seek professional help to contain and correct the damage that may already be done. You have to think of your daughter and her future and how she will perceive the REAL world and with doing so you yourself have to face whatever consequences come from your actions.

I think most here were thrown off by the widower thing. How long have you been a widower? not that it matters but could explain some of the ignorant comments. If everyone lived naked up until that age, why stop? Some mothers here fear even the own fathers?

Its getting really old, this whole puritan thing about the naked body. Sheesh. But if you want to be naked at home you should also practice what you preach and do it outdoors ( not like the poster that mentioned civil disobedience, idiot!) but practicing naturism in its truest form.

If you're gonna be naked indoors, you gotta do it outdoors too (appropriately) my two cents. Just calling you out Antonio.

In my opinion you should talk to your daughter and see what she thinks, maybe tell her to take a day or two to think about it. Just because she is comfortable with it doesn't mean she may want to keep doing it. Maybe it might be something to change a little but not a lot, like boxes for you and light undergarments for her. Its a lot to do with you as well, if you feel she has gotten to an age where she is becoming more sexually aware in a society which regards nude as sexual thing perhaps its time to start changing things just to avoid the confusion and fuss of the outside world. Such as the fuss in other parts of this conversation. In conclusion, no, there is nothing wrong nudity in a household so long as it is just that, but yes you may want to talk to your daughter about what she would like. Hope this helps :)
