Last night, my oldest child ame home around 10:30 P.M. from a school event, and asked me if she could talk to me alone? I was thinking she was going to say something about a boy wrong kind of. She has decided on her college and was invited to go on a road trip next weekend with her college age mentor and his girlfriend and a few others to the VT campus to look around. My immediate answer was I don't think so, she fired back with I am almost 18. I said let me talk this over with your Dad and get back to you. I really don't think this is a good idea, am I wrong? I trust Alex, it is just she is trying to grow up so fast. She doesn't drive yet. She doesn't drink, smoke or have sex that I know of. She likes boys but hasn't had a boyfriend yet. Actually, most boys are afraid of her because she is very smart and a very strong presents. However, she is very sensitive as well. This is my baby.

Um...one question...If you won't let her visit her campus now, what are you going to do when she's preparing to MOVE there???

Just curious. It's a tough age, I know, I'm struggling with the road trip scenario myself. But, I also know that my kid is 18, responsible, and attentive, so I must begin to let him spread his wings.

Update. We had my daughter invite her mentor over for supper and he came over last night. Seem very nice didn't have three heads and wasn't green or anything. He was terrified of my husband and I found out later I terrified him as well. He made the comment once or twice that he had never had an interrogation this tough when dating a girl let alone for taking someone with him on a road trip. I just told him this is my daughter and my responsibility to know who she is with and to know she is safe. After all she is still a minor. So asked him point blank questions about his habits; drinking, smoking, drug use, SEX, and driving. My husband was running late so it was a one parent show until he got home and then it started over again. Poor guy, you could actually see him sweating. His parents are very strict as well so he did understand. So yes, my daughter will be going I am still not thrilled but at least I know he is a good guy.
