My 17 year old boy is back to smoking pot after being busted and quitting 6 months ago. We grounded him before, started drug testing him, and demanded that he go to the gym regularly. He has applied to colleges, gotten some acceptance letters already, doesnt really seem too care though, never talks to us about schools, never talks to us about much at all. As soon as I ask him a question about anything, he is instantly annoyed and shuts me down. Now, my husband found a pot pipe in his car, he isn't getting along with his classmates, and doesnt like to be at home. He has ADD and anxiety and a variety of other stressers in his life. He has had therapy in the past, but even though we will ground him, I know he wont really talk to us. I love him but he is not a great kid anymore. What direction should we be looking in? I dont really feel like paying for an expensive college for a kid who really doesnt care, do I?

"not a great kid anymore" hmm well let me give you my insight as im a teen who smokes pot.. It really doesn't matter what direction your looking in. My best advice is keep him busy. let him join a gym. I started keeping myself busy and found that my pot intake has reduced tremendously. If your going to push him and ground him thats only going to make him more furious with you = Rebelling= smoking more pot (been through it, I know what happens) Try to educate him about it and please don't neglect him just cause he smokes pot.. after all its just a pretty plant. He's using pot to cope. It seems.

Is he medicated cause it sounds like he is self medicating, pot helps to slow down the brain which makes a child with ADD feel better. I 'm condoning it by any means but I bet that is what he is doing. Trying to make himself feel better maybe it is time to go back to his doctor and have him reevaluated this may or may not work because of his age.

Wish I could help you out more I am 20 and use to smoke pot a lot when I was 14 and 15 I have ADHD and would smoke before exams so I could calm down and focus a bit more on what I was doing. Then I got pregnant at 16 I quick smoking both pot and cigarettes. My lil one was 3 months old and I tried smoking it again*she was gone for the weekend and was in good care* I found that pot affected me in a whole different way and I just really hated the way I felt and never touched the crap again so come august I will be 4 years clean of it :) I am fine with people who smoke it but it really depends on how it affects their personality.

he for sure is self-medicating. We asked him last time he was busted to try other methods to reduce his anxiety, because although I don't blame him for wanting relief, the pot smoking ramifications are just too great. He originally agreed, went to the gym, stayed away fom the pot smokers, but after 6 months is back to it. Staying out til late, smoking weed in his car, having pipes and what-not in there and having a romose-like attitude. His doctor is useless. He already takes medication for anxiety and add, and she just doesnt have the tools necessary to deal efficiently with the problem. She just lectures, then prescribes. Doctors dont work all the time with these issues. Sometimes I think that a positive mentor slightly older would be better. Dont thnk he would agree to that though. IDK....
