Optometrist vs opthamologist why can't they see eye to eye

My son was diagnosed with strabismus with alternating esotropia several months ago by an opthamologist. Lets call him the doctor. We did some calling around after surgery was recommended in hopes that we could find a doctor who had a different opinion. We found a vision therapist who said he absolutely did not need surgery. Let's call her the therapist. Why are the approaches so incredibly different? Neither side will admit that the other will do any good for our son. His pediatrician suggested we get yet another opinion. Saw another opthamologist who recommended surgery as well. I find it interesting how everyone simply refers to their doctor but how many are actually seeing a doctor and how many have only ever seen a therapist. We had our son wear the glasses with bifocals, scrip for farsightedness and a frosting painted on the inner portion of each lense prescribed by the therapist. We can't be sure if they do anything. The therapist claims yes but the doctor says absolutely not...they don't do anything and the practice is antiquated. Then my husband finds a study out there about how patients followed their surgery up with therapy and some that didnt require it. Http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8259271 So, there are doctors and therapists out there that work hand in hand? I suppose we haven't run into anyone like that as of yet. We are scheduled for surgery at this time because we figure science rules, but just might call this therapist back after the surgery even though she rubbed me the wrong way last time I went in. So far each professional has said we should listen to them because they have the correct education for this. The doctors say they have all their medical doctor training and the therapists don't have that. The therapist said they have all their training in therapy and the medical doctors just want to cut up your kids eye muscles. So I turn to the Internet to see if anybody has had a similar experience and what you ended up doing.

I'm going through this exact same thing with my son (15 mo). Debating which route to go opthomologist or vision therapy. How did the surgery go with your son?
