My one month old is on Enfamil Gentlease, which is suppose to help with fussiness and gas, and almost every time he tries to pass gas or poop he cries. It's like he's straining to push it out and his face turns real red.

He only poops once a day or every other day. His dad is lactose intolerant so I'm wondering if the formula could be the problem and if we should try switching to soy or a different brand...

I have talked to his doctor about it and he didn't seem concerned. Has anyone else had problems with this formula?

I find putting about a tablespoon of prune juice in with their formula works wonders, my husbands family told me to try it and I haven't had much problem with it, try it out once or twice a day, depending on how bad the constipation gets, we actually have to put it in every other bottle for my son, and he goes at least once every other day and usually has no problems having bowel movements, we have him on Similac advance with the gentlease and immunitide stuff in it, but if the formula is iron fortified then that might also be what making your baby constipated, the chance is always there

my baby couldent stand that formula and we tried the soy and she would have nothing to do with it either so we went back to enfilmil with iron but i also gave her 1 ounce of stait apple or prune juice or sugar water. a co-worker suggested white syrup but never tried it my daughter had problems in that area for a few months until she realized that she had to poop on her own sometimes at that age they forget they have to poop the doctor told me she would be fine and she's 6 months old now and i havent had a problems in over 3-1/2 months

Some people don't agree with giving their babies water, but for constipation we give our son water with brown sugar (5oz bottle with 1/2 tsp of brown sugar in it). My mom used it with my sister and I, and now I use it with my son, it works great!

My son had the same issues when he was a baby. I switched him to soy formula and things cleared right up! Although, for a formula-fed baby, pooping once a day is normal. A friend of mine had a problem with her daughter being constipated, and her pediatrician actually had her give the baby some warm prune juice. I would probably check with your pediatrician before doing that with such a young baby, though. Good luck!

Hi! I would try using gripe water. You can find it at most pharmacy's. Its expensive but totally worth it! Just remember to refridgerate it after you open it, or it will go bad!! Another thing i would try is either apple or pear baby juice. Not very much though. Maybe once ounce of juice and 2 to 3 oz of tepid water. And then just wait for a nice and full diaper.. :) Hope this helps.

I would try switching to Nutramigen. My daughter was constipated when she was very young too. She was three days old when it started and the doctor suggested Karo syrup which we tried but it didn't work. He finally decided to put her on Nutramigen, it was a last resort because it's very expensive, like 30 dollars per can, but she was having normal BMs the next day. It's very easy on the tummy and easy to digest. It's very pricey but definately worth it!

i have also found that putting 1 tsp of brown sugar in 7 to 8 ounces of water and give him 1 or 2 ounces of the mix a day will help and depending on where you live shoppers drug mart sells this stuff called ovol and i found with my son he would be fussy and i give him alittle bit and within and hour or so he would have a couple of big farts and poop...it has stuff in it that gets rid of foam and bubbles and ive found it works much better for me tahn gripe water and you dont have to use as much

Gripe Water. Alcohol Free one.. helps with gas and moving things along. :)
There are other gripe waters that contain alcohol, but I didn't like the way it made him drowsy and basically drunk, even the small amounts i was giving him.

My youngest had issues with that. His dr told me to give him 1 tsp of benefiber in his bottle twice a day.

When he got on solid food, he had more issues, and I had to give him 1 tbs of mineral oil or do the karo syrup thing. That would usually loosen him up. Good luck!!

You can try goats milk for the lactose problem. Soy milk is a great fix too. My husband and all his brothers were lactose intolerant as children too. As far as the constipation problem, you can try stimulating his bowel. Use something like potrollium jelly and rub in circles. This always worked for my niece. She would scream and cry and if nothing else helped her then I knew she was just constipated. Doing this fixed the problem within minutes. I hope I could help! -Lexy

If your little one is constipated you can put karo syrup in his bottle. Our Dr. said to use 1 tsp. for every 2 ounces of firmula in the bottle, but no more than 3 tsp. a day. Do not give your baby water our Dr. told me it is not good for them until they are about 6 months old. Also if the constipation gets really bad they make sipositories for babies also. Talk to your doctor about the best option for your little one.
