2 year old not talking as much as others

My son will be turning 2 on July 17 and he still has yet to really start talking.. He says mama and dada and ball and other little things but he's not nearly as advanced as some other kids his age.. Is this something I should worry about? Most of the kids I've seen have older siblings to learn from and I don't know.. I just don't want others to not be able to understand him or think he's weird because he hasn't picked up on talking just yet /:

As long is he understands a lot of what you say and is able to communicate (using gestures, pointing, demonstrating what he means, using the few words that he has) I wouldn't worry.

The concern is usually if kids are delayed in all areas of language - when they don't understand what you tell them and aren't able to express themselves at all.

Expose him to as much language as possible. Describe what you do as you do it. If he points to a bird say, "yes, that's a bird". Read to him. Sing songs. Do rhymes and finger plays. Kids learn language by hearing language, but the do it when they're reading and lots of children don't start to really talk until they're closer to 2.5 or 3.
