3 month SGA baby with feeding issues? suggestions please!

Hi
I wasnt sure where to post this so i hope this is the right place!
My little man was 3 months old yesterday and has had feeding and weight gain issues from the start. Long story short he was induced at 37 weeks and weighed 2.38 kilos. Spent 2 weeks in the special care nursery because he wouldnt feed from the breast or bottle.
Finally got him breast feeding with top up bottles of formula to get the weight on. at 3 weeks he refused to take to the breast so has been on formula since then.

His weight gains are starting to really pick up at his weekly check yesterday he weighed 4.36 (we weigh weekly).

He was originally on S26 Gold but he was getting a bit consitipated so last week i changed him over to Karicare Gold and it has the exact opposite effect on him. his poo is runny and smells horrible! The MACH nurse said to keep on with the Karicare but im half tempted to change him back. he doesnt seem as interested in his feeds and its a struggle to get him to take 100mls whereas on the s26 he was taking around 120mls at each feed.

We have come so far with getting his weight up i would hate for him to start loosing weight again but the MACH nurse just doesnt seem to worried.
Am i just being overeacting a bit?! its my first baby! has anyone else had problems like this?

My second daughter had her first 2 bottom teeth cut through when she was 3 months old. She is now 8 months, and is now on tooth number 6. However my older daughter didn't get her first tooth until she was 6 months old.

It is soo hard with kids, because they are all pre-programmed, and do things when they are ready to do them. So it is possible to start teething at 3 months thats for sure.

Signs to look for if he is teething:

-excessive drooling

-chewing on everything, toys, your fingers, etc

-grizzly/fussy/clingy

-If they are starting to cut through you will actually be able to see the white of the tooth through the gum or the gums will be quite red, and normally the first 2 teeth for a bub are their bottom front 2 teeth, so thats where I would suggest looking first.

-mild temperature

If he is teething, some teething relief gel will work, or Brauers Teething relief is what I used, its a natural homeopathic medicine. And teething toys that you can put in your fridge are good also.

It is soo tough with these lil ones though, because they can't tell us what is wrong...

I'm not too sure about that unfortunately. Possibly because it is a different formula, maybe he doesn't need that much or he is getting used to the different taste. You said you weigh him weekly right? So maybe if you just stick with this, and offer him as much you normally would, and when you next weigh him, you will definitely know if he is getting enough.
Also, could he be teething? Because sometimes when your bub starts to teethe, they lose interest in feeds a little bit....

Thanks, Do you have any ideas about how i can get him to drink more? He is really struggling to drink 100mls of this karicare formula. on the s26 he would easily take 120mls. i tend to panic about him starting to lose weight again, he is such a skinny little thing. .

I know of a few friends who had the same problem you had with S26 Gold and getting constipated.

From my understanding, when you change over formulas it can have affects like you are saying. I would suggest persevering for a week or 2 longer to give your bub a chance to get used to this different formula.

And you're not overreacting at all, this is what mums do, we worry about everything!

If after a week or 2, if he still has runny poos, maybe going down to the Karicare or the S26 normal formula would be try. But you don't want to change your bubs formula too much, because it messes with their tummy's and all.

I've always used Karicare Gold plus for both my girls and haven't had a problem with it so far.
